The Capitals have played themselves into a comfortable hold on a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, while the Avs are making a push to get back into the playoff picture in the West.

This should be a fun game to watch as both teams come in riding high.

Avalanche

Colorado really stumbled out of the gate and it looked like it was going to be a tough go in the sophomore season for head coach Patrick Roy as well as young superstar Nathan MacKinnon.

The Avs have really turned a corner of late though and have put together a tidy 7-3-0 record over their past 10 games including a three game win streak that they’re riding into this game.

Last year’s surprise story are now just four points out of the final playoff spot in the West and you have to figure if they can keep this play going they’ll be right there come the end of the month.

Goalie Semyon Varlamov was phenomenal in a 2-0 win over Chicago, stopping 54 shots on the way to a shutout and the Avs have to be happy to see Nathan MacKinnon’s play starting to pick back up after a miserable stretch where he managed just one goal in 18 games.

The young Centre has two goals and three points in his last three games, including the game winner in a 4-3 victory over the Stars his last game out.

Capitals

Washington just keeps rolling along and have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL for the past month.

The Caps have lost just one game in regulation over their past 10 games, posting a record of 7-1-2.

Goalie Braden Holtby is having a career year and if he keeps up this play he could very easily find himself in the Vezina conversation, especially with off years from perennial candidates like Jonathan Quick and Tuukka Rask.

Holtby is in the top 10 in the NHL for wins, GAA and SV% and over the past month it’s hard to argue that any goalie has been more valuable to their team than he has, and with nine wins in the last 30 days, Holtby is second to only Henrik Lundqvist.

The forward group is what you’d expect from the Caps, Ovie and Backstrom are leading the way but a strong supporting cast has really lightened the load and defenseman John Carlson is quietly putting together a very strong season with 31 points in 41 games and a team leading +15 rating.

Carlson sits fourth in scoring among NHL defensemen, ahead of the likes of Drew Doughty, Duncan Keith and P.K. Subban.

Avalanche vs. Capitals 4* Free Pick

The Avs have been on a nice little roll here but I think going into Washington is just going to be too tough on this night against a good team that is playing solid hockey.

Varlamov could always steal one as he did against Chicago, but I think the Caps are going to be a bit too much for an Avalanche team that was a little shaky defensively against the Stars.

Take Washington.
