Cappers NHL Picks: NHL January 23rd 2015 Power Rankings

Where do teams stand in the NHL?

It’s been two weeks since we updated the Rankings – the All-Star break has here and now it is time for teams to saddle up and race to the finish. Although there has been some reshuffling, the elite 5 remain in the top tier after two weeks while some surprise teams are knocking on the door of a dirty dozen spot.

With the All-Star break taking place this weekend, where does you favorite team lay in the bi-weekly edition of the NHL Power Rankings? Let’s take a look.

1. Anaheim Ducks 31-10-6 (Two Weeks Ago: 3)

The Ducks head into the All-Star break with the best record in the NHL and on a five game win streak. We all knew that the offense would do the job but how about Frederik Andersen?

2. Nashville Predators 30-10-5 (Two Weeks Ago: 1)

Pekka Rinne has been out for a couple weeks and is still expected to be out some time but the team is 7-1-2 in their last 10 games – impressive. The offense is exceeding expectations and the team is third best in the NHL with a +22 goal differential thanks to a league best goals against.

3. Tampa Bay Lightning 30-14-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 2)

The Lightning enter the break with the best offense in the game (156 goals) and have won three straight games. A mini-slump last week is a thing of the past!

4. New York Islanders 31-14-1 (Two Weeks Ago: 4)

The Islanders just keep defying the odds! They are fourth in the overall standings and have scored 151 goals so far – second best in the league. Those of you waiting for the dropoff will be waiting for a long, long time it appears!

5. New York Rangers 27-13-5 (Two Weeks Ago: 5)

The Rangers are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games and head into the break on a three game wins streak – they have won 15 of their last 18 games! They have a +28 goal differential – second best in the East, have a scorching Rick Nash and of course – Henrik Lundqvist.

6. St. Louis Blues 29-13-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 8)

The Blues have shrugged off an unflattering stretch and have gone 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. They have allowed just 111 goals this season – fourth best in the league and own one of the most balanced lineups in the game.

7. Montreal Canadiens 29-13-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 9)

I’m still baffled as to why PK Subban isn’t an All-Star! They beat the Preds and the Islanders last week and are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games overall. Montreal is for real – able to get it done in both ends of the rink.

8. Detroit Red Wings 27-11-9 (Two Weeks Ago: 10)

The Wings have climbed to fifth in the Overall Standings at the All-Star break thanks to an 8-2-0 stretch. They have won five straight games and look as dangerous a team as there is in the East.

9. Chicago Blackhawks 30-15-2 (Two Weeks Ago: 6)

The Hawks are in a slump by their standards – just 5-5-0 in their last 10 games. The problem has been goal scoring – I can’t see that problem existing for long!

10. Pittsburgh Penguins 26-12-8 (Two Weeks Ago: 7)

The Penguins are just 4-3-3 in their last 10 games and lost to Philadelphia again on Wednesday. Evgeni Malkin is out indefinitely and Kris Letang is still feeling the effects of a dirty hit – a little adversity for what should be a top 5 team. They enter the Break on a two-game OT losing streak but like the Hawks, I can’t see it lasting.

11. Washington Capitals 24-13-9 (Two Weeks Ago: 11)

The Capitals look like a different team with Barry Trotz behind the bench. They are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games, Brayden Holtby is on fire and Alex Ovechkin is… Alex Ovechkin.

12. Boston Bruins 26-16-7 (Two Weeks Ago: 12)

The Bruins are finally starting to flex their muscle – they are 6-1-3 in their last 10 games and sit in a tie with Washington for 12th in the Overall standings. It was only a matter of time.

13. Winnipeg Jets 26-14-8 (Two Weeks Ago: 15)
14. Calgary Flames 25-19–3 (Two Weeks Ago: 20)
15. San Jose Sharks 25-17-6 (Two Weeks Ago: 16)
16. Vancouver Canucks 26-16-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 13)
17. Colorado Avalanche 20-18-10 (Two Weeks Ago: 19)
18. Los Angeles Kings 20-15-12 (Two Weeks Ago: 17)
19. Dallas Stars 21-18-7 (Two Weeks Ago: 21)
20. Ottawa Senators 19-18-9 (Two Weeks Ago: 23)
21. Florida Panthers 20-14-10 (Two Weeks Ago: 14)
22. New Jersey Devils 17-22-8 (Two Weeks Ago: 27)
23. Carolina Hurricanes 16-25-5 (Two Weeks Ago: 28)
24. Philadelphia Flyers 19-22-7 (Two Weeks Ago: 24)
25. Toronto Maple 22-23-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 18)
26. Minnesota Wild 20-20-6 (Two Weeks Ago: 25)
27. Columbus Blue Jackets 20-22-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 22)
28. Arizona Coyotes 16-25-5 (Two Weeks Ago: 26)
29. Edmonton Oilers 12-26-9 (Two Weeks Ago: 30)
30. Buffalo Sabres 14-30-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 29)
