The Wings got away from the formula that helped them shock the Bruins in Game 1 – emotion took over and allowed the Bruins to dictate the pace of play and set the physical tone en route to a 4-1 Game 2 victory. Boston is still the team to beat in the East but if the Wings, who have had the better of the Bruins at Joe Louis Arena, can get back to the skill game instead of relying on physicality it becomes an intriguing series going forward.

As mentioned, Boston in Game 2 was able to get back to the physical brand of hockey that allowed them to finish atop the NHL overall standings this past season. Defense and hard physical play was Boston’s blueprint for success all season long – something that will have to continue if they hope to get by the talented and speedy Wings.

Boston has allowed just two goals in the first two games of the series – Tuukka Rask has stopped 57 of 59 shots in the series for the Bruins, a .966 save percentage – terrific numbers for the probable Vezina Trophy winner. He is doing his part and in Game 2 the offense certainly did theirs.

Jarome Iginla, and Torrey Krug each have two assists in the series, Milan Lucic and Zdeno Chara each have a goal and Loui Eriksson is finally paying dividends for the team after what was a disappointing regular season. Boston’s four lines were effective in Game 2 – something that makes the Bruins extremely difficult to play against. The Bruins power play also woke up in Game 2 going 2-for-4 while allowing the Wings just no goals on four chances.

The Detroit Red Wings played about as well as they could have in Game 1 but were sucked into a Boston type of game. Coach Mike Babcock said of Brenden Smith`s run-in with Zdeno Chara, “You walk into the bar and there’s this beautiful young gal standing next to this 6-foot-5 monster, who you know makes his living fighting for a living and you’re the best pool player in the bar,” Babcock said. “Are you going to play pool or are you going to fight?”

Simply put there is absolutely no way the Red Wings can hang with Boston in a physical matchup.

Offensively the Wings have to pick it up! One goal per game isn’t going to get it done against any team. Gustav Nyquist hasn’t scored in eight games, Daniel Alfredsson is pointless in the series, Justin Abdelkader, David Legwand, Nik Kronwall and Ben Smith have also been absent from the score sheet thus far.

Jimmy Howard essentially stole Game 1 but he gave up four goals in Game 2. Detroit enters Game 3 as underdogs again – Howard absolutely has to be the difference Tuesday.

A few trends to consider:
• Over is 20-6-2 in BOS last 28 road games.
• Over is 6-2 in BOS last 8 Tue. games.
• BOS are 47-23 in their last 70 overall.
• DET are 2-8 in their last 10 Tue. games.
• DET are 9-3 in their last 12 vs. Atlantic.
• Under is 25-10 in DET last 35 Tue. games.
• BOS are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings.

Boston has lost its last four visits to Joe Louis Arena, including two this season but, as we know the Bruins are built for playoff hockey. Detroit was perhaps lucky to win Game 1 – it appears as though that win served to wake the sleeping Giant that is the Bruins. Boston is a motivated bunch and may not lose another game in the series.

Pick: Boston Bruins -141
