With the NHL trade deadline arriving next week, lots of Stanley Cup contenders are making serious moves to jockey for position atop the standings.

Here’s a look at the current futures. Who are the top contenders? Whose stock is rising? Whose stock is falling?

TOP CONTENDERS

Detroit Red Wings
Stanley Cup odds: +350

The NHL’s best-run franchise, the Red Wings are hockey’s answer to the Indianapolis Colts and San Antonio Spurs. Every year, they hang near the top of every contender list. They still have a deep group of skilled, defensively conscious forwards led by Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. But is this team big enough? And will Jimmy Howard show up in goal for the playoffs?

Philadelphia Flyers
Stanley Cup odds: +350

It’s the same old story for the Philadelphia Flyers. No team is better or deeper at forward. The defense corps is bruising and playoff-ready. But will the goaltending deliver? It failed them in the Stanley Cup final last year.

Vancouver Canucks
Stanley Cup odds: +350

There’s no reason why Vancouver shouldn’t win the Stanley Cup. It has a plethora of defensive injuries but most of their wounded are expected to return for the postseason. It has two outstanding forward lines and two of the NHL’s top three scorers with the Sedin twins. All Vancouver needs is for Roberto Luongo to finally become a big-game goalie.

Boston Bruins
Stanley Cup odds: +450

It’s a cliché that gets used too often but the Boston Bruins really do seem “built for the playoffs.” They have the NHL’s best goaltending and two 30-minute-a-night workhorses with Zdeno Chara and Tomas Kaberle on the back end. Nathan Horton and Milan Lucic lead a group of big, mean forwards who can really forecheck. The only things the Bruins lack are a true playmaking center and bona fide 40-goal sniper.

STOCK RISING

San Jose Sharks
Stanley Cup odds: +900

The Sharks are one of the league’s hottest teams but are they secretly still pretenders? Their hot streak has been almost entirely the result of unconscious play from Anti Niemi. Their stars like Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley still aren’t having good seasons. If Niemi goes cold, so could the Sharks.

Phoenix Coyotes
Stanley Cup odds: +200

On paper, the Coyotes still don’t look like a juggernaut, but they find a way to win. Ilya Bryzgalov is back playing well between the pipes and Keith Yandle has a real shot to win the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman.

Los Angeles Kings
Stanley Cup odds: +4000

The Kings are finally making their push and hoping to squeak into the playoffs as a low seed. They’re still one of the league’s deepest and most talented teams despite their early-season struggles. I’d bet on them reaching the big dance. Look for them to push hard for a sniper before the trade deadline.

New Jersey Devils
Stanley Cup odds: +5000

16-1-2 over their last 19 games. Simply amazing. How can we not attribute that success to Jacques Lemaire? The Devils still have a long way before they’re back in the playoff race but, at this rate, they’ll get there. And who wants to play them in the first round?

STOCK FALLING

Washington Capitals
Stanley Cup odds: +1000

It’s time to acknowledge that there’s something mentally missing from this team. The Caps have all the talent in the world but they may lack the heart and drive needed to win a Stanley Cup. Are Bruce Boudreau’s days as head coach numbered?

Pittsburgh Penguins
Stanley Cup odds: +1500

The Pens have fallen but it’s not their fault. Injuries have ravaged them. No Sidney Crosby and no Evgeni Malkin means no shot at the Holy Grail this season.

Chicago Blackhawks
Stanley Cup odds: +2500

If ever there was a case study to show the importance of role players on a championship team, the Chicago Blackhawks are it. They retained the stars from their 2010 Stanley Cup-winning team: Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Patrick Sharp. But six guys can’t win you a cup. Losing Versteeg, Byfuglien, Ladd, and Niemi has proven quite costly. The Hawks are no lock the make the playoffs.
