Week 3 NFL Lines: Titans vs. Jets

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Sunday Football Week 3 NFL clash between the Tennessee Titans and the New York Jets…

Sunday NFL Betting – Titans In Trouble Against Confident Jets

The 2008 Tennessee Titans finished 13-3 and didn’t experience their first loss until Week 12. Quite clearly, the 2009 version is having a very different experience.

Not only are the Titans still winless after two weeks of action, they are in danger of matching their total amount of losses from 2008 with one more defeat.

On the surface, it looks like the Titans have a very similar roster to last year’s unit and some might even say that the offense was upgraded, but there are two very noticeable changes: the departure of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

The Titans pass defense is ranked dead last in the NFL and with the defense not carrying it’s weight, the spotlight is shifting to a limited offense. With problems aplenty, the Titans now head out on the road to what is suddenly one of the toughest teams to play.

Titans offense vs Jets defense

It’s fairly clear that the Titans offense is limited and they are very close to heading down a road they don’t want to go down: relying too much on running back Chris Johnson.

The Titans offense got nearly 300 yards of offense and three touchdowns from Johnson alone last week and they still lost. Clearly, he’s not the problem and the simple solution is to just hand him the ball more often.

The problem is that the Titans need to develop their feeble passing game and figure out how they are going to win games when Johnson is taken out of the equation.

Sunday will be a good test as the New York Jets defense has yet to give up an offensive touchdown in the first two games. Rest assured that they will coral Johnson and force the Titans to win this game through the air.

Jets offense vs Titans defense

The Titans defense has surrendered back-to-back 300-yard passing games and rest assured that they have taken notice of that. Even so, their game plan is going to be to run the ball and take some pressure off of rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, who’s going up against a defense that feels scorned.
The Jets coaches have devised very good game plans in both weeks and they are again going to rely on defense and field position until their young quarterback gets comfortable in the game. It will probably look similar to last week’s performance as the Jets play conservative for a half and then find the cracks in the Titans secondary later in the game.

Outlook & Pick
The Jets have a lot of things going for them in this game. They are going up against a team with a very limited, one-dimensional offense and they have what might be the best defense in the NFL. On top of that, they are at home.
The Titans are desperate for a win but that’s not always a good thing. Playing on the road in this situation, a desperate team is more liable to get away from its game plan and make mistakes.

The Jets simply won’t let Chris Johnson run wild and if that’s the case, the Titans will be up against to devise a way to score enough points to win this game.

Pick: Jets -3

One reply on “Week 3 NFL Lines: Titans vs. Jets”

This game will be all about which team’s defense has the best day. The Jets have been stiffling so far, but a sense a bit of a letdown, allowing the Titans to get their first win.
