It had to happen sometime. We were spoiled with week after week of last-second field goals, wild comebacks and all-around great games. Then Sunday, December 12, 2010 happened. Ugly football spread like a virus. Roofs collapsed. Teams got blown out.

Colts 30, Titans 28

The Thursday-nighter gave no hint that Sunday would be a dud, as the Colts and Titans played a reasonably spirited affair. Indy didn’t abandon the run and got just enough from Javarris James and Donald Brown to keep the Titans’ defense honest. Low and behold, Peyton Manning didn’t throw a pick. If Joseph Addai can return this week, it’ll give Indy’s offense a huge boost.

Buccaneers 17, Redskins 16

Here’s another score that makes me look bad. There were blowouts on Sunday, I swear! Keep reading. The Bucs and Redskins played a close game on paper but it was ugly. Missed-extra-point-with-no-time-on-the-clock ugly.

Bills 13, Browns 6

Peyton Hillis is human after all, as he showed with his three lost fumbles. Never thought I’d say this, but the Browns offense just isn’t the same without Colt McCoy at the helm. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Lions 7, Packers 3

I pity the loyal Packer fan who bought tickets for this game and made the trek. Aaron Rodgers must learn to slide. Maybe if Green Bay drafts a bellcow running back this spring, its quarterback won’t feel the need to turn every scramble into a first down and more.

Jaguars 38, Raiders 31

The most exciting game of the day is the game nobody watched! Damn. I don’t know what to say about David Garrard anymore. It isn’t always pretty but he finds a way to win and put touchdowns on the board. Is he a poor man’s Josh Freeman?

Steelers 23, Steelers 7

Bold statement: no player is more valuable to the Pittsburgh Steelers than Troy Polamalu. Think about it. Won the Super Bowl with him in 2008, floundered and missed the playoffs without him in 2009. In 2010, they go 3-1 without Ben Roethlisberger and dominate with Troy in the lineup all year.

Falcons 31, Panthers 10

Here’s hoping you bet on this game. I’d argue it was the week’s safest pick. Nice to see the Falcons win by more than a touchdown for a change. Michael Turner just can’t be stopped in the red zone.

49ers 40, Seahawks 21

Leave it to Alex Smith to throw for 255 yards and three touchdowns with no picks and still manage to look kind of bad doing it. Still, the 49ers have to feel good about avenging their Week-1 humiliation against Seattle.

Saints 31, Rams 13

Hey – Sam Bradford is still a rookie. He can’t win ’em all. Pretty tall order trying to win inside the Superdome against the defending champs. Drew Brees seems to march the ball down the field whenever he wants to these days.

Patriots 36, Jets 7

Just like the 2007 incarnation, isn’t it strange that these Patriots are so compellingly watchable even when they’re blowing teams out? There’s something gleeful about watching a team up by four-plus scores going for it on fourth and 11. The Pats are the Super Bowl frontrunner by a long shot.

Cardinals 43, Broncos 13

File this game under “They scored HOW MANY points!?” It looked like a predictably ugly Broncos/Cardinals score before Arizona exploded for 24 points in the fourth quarter. Remember when Kyle Orton was “good”?

Dolphins 10, Jets 6

This game probably surprised me more than any other on Sunday. The Jets were fresh off a 45-3 humiliation and playing another divisional game at home. Weren’t they supposed to absolutely pump Miami? It wasn’t to be. Maybe Mark Sanchez, who played his only college season as a starter in cushy Southern California, isn’t cut out for winter football.

Charger 31, Chiefs 10

I know Matt Cassel was out, but…whoa. Didn’t the Chiefs have the league’s No. 1 rushing offense? And a top-10 scoring defense? This should erase any doubt that the NFL remains a quarterback league.

Eagles 30, Cowboys 27

Philly eked out a win here but did the Eagles show a chink in the armor? Mike Vick saw more heat and took more hits than he has perhaps all year and turned over the ball multiple times as a result. You can bet the Eagles’ remaining opponents will study the game film from this one diligently.
