New England Patriots vs. San Diego Chargers preview

The Chargers are 2-4 and sucking wind in the AFC West, and if this sounds familiar, it is. They went down the same road last year, and the year before that, and the year before that. It’s simply in San Diego’s DNA, and perhaps Norv Turner’s too, to just bask in the late-summer Southern California sun for September and early October, and then sometime after Columbus Day wake up, rub their eyes and turn things on. It’s worked in the past, but will it work again this season? Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

The Chargers have been an OK home team, and no doubt their status as slight (-3) favorites in this battle against New England reflects that. But they have been gawdawful on the road, especially on special teams, and to make matters worse their four losses (Kansas City, St. Louis, Seattle and Oakland) came against mediocre teams with mediocre quarterbacks. At last check the Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady didn’t qualify as mediocre.

Quarterback Philip Rivers said the Bolts will be fine and that things will straighten themselves out real soon. Turner says the blame for the slow start is the coach’s fault. And GM A.J. Smith says that it’s a good thing the AFC West is full of slugs or the Chargers would be knee-deep in doo-doo.

But the here and now is that SD will have its hands more than full with a 4-1 Patriots team that has shed all its trouble-makers (most notably Adalius Thomas and Randy Moss) and has returned to its Super Bowl-style roots – moving the chains in aggravating, tire-the-defense fashion, with Brady driving teams crazy with pinpoint passes. The defense has stepped up a bit, too, after getting ripped to shreds in the first four games.

Picks: Patriots +3 and Under (47)

The Patriots used to drive LaDainain Tomlinson and Shawne Merriman absolutely nuts, but LT is gone and SM will soon follow him out the door, so some of the bad blood has disappeared in this matchup.

If this thing is won on special teams, you can be sure that it won’t be by the Chargers, who have had three punts blocked, one field goal try blocked, two kickoffs returned on them for touchdowns and one punt run back on them for a score.

And remember what the Pats did to Miami on special teams a few Monday nights ago?
