Week 2 NFL Betting: 5 Games’ Football Odds You Have To Bet On

NFL Week 2 “Insider Betting”

The second week of the NFL regular season got rolling on Thursday with the Baltimore Ravens walking all over the Pittsburgh Steelers 26-6. The previous five games between the two had all been decided by three points or less, so if this game was any indicator, week 2 could get messy when making your picks.

I took a quick glance at the NFL schedule this week and nothing immediately jumps off the page. It’s kind of a “blah” week in terms of betting with a lot of games that could go either way, and some that look to be certain blow outs.

Have no fear, as I will do my best to give you guys the edge with five more games that you shouldn’t overlook when placing your bets this weekend.

Detroit vs Carolina

Week 2 Odds Panthers -2.5

I’m kicking off this week’s picks the same way I did last week, with a game that I think the favourite is primed to lose.

Carolina was not impressive last week (granted they were without starting QB Cam Newton), in a narrow 20-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Panthers were helped out immensely by the fact that Tampa simply did not take care of the football, with QB Josh McCown throwing two picks; the Bucs also fumbled the ball three times and lost one of those.

The Lions were clinical on offense against the Giants in week one, and boast a pass attack that is really coming into its own with Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson. The two-pronged ground attack of Reggie Bush and Joique Bell is effective at keeping teams off balance and both backs catch the ball well out of the backfield.

Week 2 NFL pick: Cam Newton returning won’t be enough to get the Panthers past the Lions. Detroit looks like the best offense in the NFC North this season and Carolina is going to take a step backwards from their NFC South Division title a year ago. Take the Lions in this one.

New England vs Minnesota

Week 2 Odds Patriots – 3

Always take Tom Brady and the Patriots after a loss, always.

The Pats struggled to get anything going in week one against the Dolphins, but this team has always had a knack for bouncing back after losses. A three point spread should be easy pickings as I expect the Patriots to come out guns blazing and blow the doors off the Vikings.

Minnesota should be riding high after annihilating a very poor St. Louis Rams team a week ago. That was last week, and Tom Brady is a much bigger task than Shaun Hill.

Week 2 NFL pick: I expect this one to stay close until about half time, then look for the Pats to make some adjustments and steamroll the Vikes in the second half. Three points shouldn’t be much of a problem for New England who will be on the road for a second straight week, and I think they win this one by a touchdown.

Chicago vs San Francisco

Week 2 Odds S49ers -7 (O/U 48.5)

How things can change in the span of a week. The Bears went from being seven point favourites in week one to seven point underdogs in week two.

Yes, their level of competition takes a sharp turn from Buffalo to San Fran, but a week one OT loss to the Bills has significantly decreased the confidence of the masses in Chicago.

I’m not touching this one on spread because Jay Cutler and the Bears offense just has too many weapons and can be very Jekyl and Hyde, this one could easily turn into a shootout in the realm of 36-30 and that’s why I’m taking the over in this one.

San Fran’s offense was clicking in week one against a pretty shoddy Cowboys defense and were up 28-3 at half. The niners could probably have put another 20 on the board in the second half if they wanted to, but instead cruised and relied on the run game to eat away the clock on the way to a 28-17 win.

As mentioned, the Bears do have a bevy of weapons on offense and they can play catch up when they need to, which they probably will in this one. San Fran has home field in this game and I don’t think they’ll shut the offense down in the second half as they’re going to want to keep their crowd lively, as opposed to last week on the road when they just sapped the life out of the Dallas crowd.

Week 2 NFL pick: The Bears couldn’t stop Buffalo on the ground and the Bills racked up 193 yards last week. Look for the Bears to be chasing Colin Kaepernick and Frank Gore all day on defense, and Jay Cutler and the Bears offense will have to sling the ball around to stay in this one. I predict a high scoring affair. Go with the over.

New York Jets vs Green Bay

Week 2 Odds Packers -9

Sunday afternoon’s game that I’ll be watching is the Packers at home to the Jets, for a few reasons.

I have this sneaking suspicion that the NFC North where the Packers play is going to be the most interesting division this year and I also have a feeling that the Packers may not be able to retain their crown.

Having said that, they’ve had a long lay off since opening their season last Thursday where they were beaten pretty handily by the reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks. Green Bay looked good up until about halftime and could’ve been up had they made the most of a few arrant passes by Russel Wilson.

The Jets are 1-0 thanks to a favourable week one match up with the Raiders where they didn’t wow anyone, in a 19-14 win. QB Geno Smith was accurate if anything, going 23/28, with one of his five incomplete passes finding the Raiders for an INT. A  71 yard TD scamper in the fourth quarter by running back Chris Ivory sealed the victory, and the Jets were actually pretty good running the football, amassing 212 yards on the ground.

Week 2 NFL pick: Green Bay was very weak against the Seahawks rush attack last week, surrendering 207 yards; they’ve had a lot of time to correct that and I think they’ll hold the Jets in check.

[dfads params=’groups=63752&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

A TD and a field goal gap is all they need to cover and I think Aaron Rodgers will be out to prove that he and the Packers are still a force in the NFC North. Take Green Bay to cover.

Arizona vs New York Giants

Odds Cardinals -2.5

I’ve already written an in depth preview of this game so this will be pretty brief.

Arizona is somewhat of a sleeper and they play in the toughest division in football as far as I’m concerned. The once heralded Giants and the NFC East is just a lot softer than the big physical west coast teams. I think the Cardinals are going to physically beat on the Giants and Eli Manning and make life miserable in general.

Carson Palmer of the Cardinals will get a lot of reps on Sunday and lots of chances to stack points as I think the Giants are going to continue to be a turnover factory with Manning under constant pressure.

Week 2 NFL Pick: A 2.5 point spread is generous to the Giants, and I think the Cardinals are going to really cement themselves as a legitimate contender in the NFC West after they dispose of the G-Men in pretty embarrassing fashion. Go with the Cardinals who should really be getting more than a 2.5 point edge.
