Looking at the spreads for January 2, there may not be a tougher week of football betting than Week 17 this season. With several teams expected to rest their starters, the spreads have gone haywire.

Let’s see if we can find some relatively safe bets amid the chaos.

Minnesota Vikings @ Detroit Lions

Sunday, January 2, 1:00 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Lions -3

Even though the Detroit Lions have won three straight games, I’m still a bit surprised to see them favored over a team that just knocked off the mighty Philadelphia Eagles on the road this past Tuesday. The Lions already lost to Minnesota once this year and allowed 160 rushing yards to Adrian Peterson. All indications are that A.P. will play this week. Also, Joe Webb has a good chance to start at quarterback over Brett Favre (concussion) again. He’s shown some great playmaking ability with his feet and actually posted the same 40 time as Michael Vick, who torched the Lions earlier this year.

Considering that the Vikings also rank 10th in pass defense and eighth in run defense, they seem like a nice “upset” play here.

Prediction: Vikings 27, Lions 17

San Diego Chargers @ Denver Broncos

Sunday, January 2, 4:15 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Chargers -3.5

Believe it or not, I recommend betting with your heart here. Logic suggests the Chargers are the far superior football team to Denver. They have the league’s No. 1 defense and No. 2 offense and a Pro Bowl quarterback running the show in Philip Rivers. They also walloped the Broncos 35-14 on November 22.

Emotionally, however, Denver has far more going for it. The Chargers were hanging by a thread in the playoff hunt all season only to have their hearts broken at Cincinnati last week. The wind is gone from their sails. Meanwhile, Denver has handed Tim Tebow the reins and he’s dazzled in his first two NFL starts, giving fans reason to get excited for next year. They’re playing at home and eager to avenge their embarrassing loss to San Diego. I like them a whole bunch to surprise a mentally broken San Diego team.

Prediction: Broncos 28, Chargers 24

St. Louis Rams @ Seattle Seahawks

Sunday,January2, 8:35 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Rams -3

I know Seattle can be a deafening place to play for opposing teams and Sam Bradford could have a tough time calling plays as a rookie. But the Seahawks are a joke. They’ve lost five of their last six games. Surely the football gods won’t award them the NFC West, especially with Charlie Whitehurst set to start at quarterback…right?

Prediction: Rams 23, Seahawks 17
