Cleveland Browns vs. Miami Dolphins Preview

This isn’t fish-or-cut-bait time for the Dolphins. The warranty on these Dolphins expired a while back. There’s no shame in losing to Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Chicago. Those are all playoff-caliber teams.

But those are the teams that the Dolphins had to beat to get into the playoffs, and they couldn’t do it. So when post-season play begins in about a month, Miami will — barring a miracle – once again be on the outside looking in.

The Dolphins can use the rest of the season to once and for all figure out if Chad Henne is their guy going forward, or whether they will have to quarterback shop in the off-season. Doesn’t it seem like the Dolphins have been arguing with themselves about Henne for years?

Miami may be forced into an uncomfortable choice with Henne – namely, are the Dolphins willing to commit for the good part of the next decade to a quarterback who may never become the elite player the team needs to break the Patriots-Jets axis atop the AFC East? Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

Because Tom Brady is at the top of his game right now (and figures to be for a while), and Mark Sanchez is getting better and better.

Can Henne take that big Next Step and give Miami at least a puncher’s chance against what may be the two best teams in the National Football League?

After throwing three interceptions in the season-turning Week 9 loss to the Ravens in which the Dolphins scored only 10 points, coach Tony Sparano benched Henne in favor of Chad Pennington. Pennington last only a few minutes before being injured for the year in Week 10 vs. Tennessee, Henne was also hurt in that game, and Tyler Thigpen also had a shot at the job for a bit.

Now Henne is back at it, and the Dolphins will gladly take weekly repeats of the 17-for-30, 285-yard effort in last week’s win over the Raiders. Henne had two TDs and one pick in that one.

For his part, Henne says that he is more confident than ever, and that his 1.5-week time-out has given him new perspective. He’s ready to take his game to the next level.

Maybe. Maybe not. But this is certain: The AFC East is a cold, dark place without a top-level quarterback. Even in Florida.

Betting  Trends:

Under is 11-3-1 in CLE last 15 games in December.
CLE are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 vs. AFC.
Over is 10-2-1 in MIA last 13 home games.
Over is 7-2-1 in MIA last 10 games on grass.
Over is 10-4-1 in MIA last 15 games in Week 13.

Picks: Oddsmakers and handicappers will agree on one thing – motivation late in the season can turn a point spread. The Carolinas and Arizonas of the league appear to have cashed it in, but not so for teams such as Buffalo and Cleveland. And that makes this one difficult to gauge.

The Browns are starting to figure things out, evidenced by wins over New Orleans and New England, plus a narrow loss to Pittsburgh and the giveaway to the Jets. Miami has yet to put together back-to-back solid games all season.

Liking Cleveland +4.5 with a second play on the under with two run-oriented teams.
