2008 Record: 8-8
ATS: 6-8-2

Even after acquiring arguably the best defensive player if all of football last year, not many people are buying into the Washington Redskins.

Interestingly enough, Albert Haynesworth could be the last missing piece on the Redskins defense to take them from being fairly good to being dominant. They have edge rushers, they have a solid linebacking corps and an above average secondary.

But at the same time, Haynesworth has a track record of being lazy when he’s not in a contract year and the Redskins have a tendency to overpay for a whole lot of nothing in free agency. See: Antwan Randel El.

On offense, the Redskins are also close as they have a good young quarterback, a competent offensive line and a very good running game. But are the young wide receivers ready?

The Redskins spent three first round picks on receiving threats in wideouts Devin Thomas, Malcom Kelly and tight end Fred Davis. If all three grow into contributors this year, combined with Santana Moss on the outside, this offense could flourish. But that might be asking a lot from a trio that combined for 21 catches last year.

Without a serious receiving threat, the Redskins offense is just too vanilla. They are good, they can work over some of the weaker defenses, but when an elite team shuts down their running game, they simply don’t have any answers.

If Haynesworth is the answer and the young offensives pieces grow up, this could really be a surprise team in the NFL. But as we all know, the Redskins usually get the job done on paper and not in reality, which means another 8-8 season is looming.

I just don’t see this team winning with Jason Campbell at QB. He is adequate, but that is not enough in a very competitive NFC East.

The other problem is that you have an owner with no patience. He spends money like its water, but most times on the wrong players.

Bring the beast to the east! Haynesworth is a good player but playing against the massive Olines in the NFC East will be a challenge. The offense is solid but inconsistent and Zorn needs to commit to Portis or this team will finish with double digit losses. 4th in the NFC East

Not much optimism huh? Agreed! The team’s offense is chalk full of 2nd stringers outside Portis, whos injury history is a legit. concern. The D. is good, but you have to score points to win. I don’t see that happening with Campbell at QB, and only Cooley and Portis in the offense who scare anyone
