Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL Gambling Odds & 2015 Handicapping Preview

2015 Tampa Bay Predictions

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter the 2015-16 NFL Season looking to start a new era. That era would be the one where No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston starts to turn around the identity of this franchise for the better.

2014 Record: 7-8-1 – Bucs
ATS:
Buccaneers Odds to win the 2016 NFC South Division: +200
Buccaneers Odds to win the 2016 NFC Conference: 22/1
Buccaneers Odds to win the 2016 Super Bowl: 40/1

The Buccaneers are hoping that Winston can establish himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the division that is already full of top-level lead men behind center. Matt Ryan, Drew Brees and Cam Newton have all made names for themselves, and at this point in the process, there’s little reason to believe Winston won’t eventually get there.

The question, of course, is whether or not Winston can do it this season? More realistically, the question is: How long will it take him? Seeing as it’s unlikely he moves himself into that tier right away.

In Winston’s favor is that he has two large targets at wide receiver. Both Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson are going to make the former Florida State Seminole’s transition to the NFL a bit easier, as both as 1,000-yard receivers.

The real key here to finding offensive success for both Winston and the rest of the Buccaneers is protecting the quarterback. The Bucs gave up 52 sacks last season, which was tied for the third-highest number in the league in that particular category.

A first-year quarterback needs as much protection as he can get, and as good as Winston has the potential to be, he’s no exception to that rule.

Defensively, this group was unable to find a ton of success in Lovie Smith’s system. Opponents were averaging 34 points per contest during the first six weeks of ths season last year.

The key cog of this unit is Gerald McCoy. The secondary is solid, but it’s the defensive tackle who recorded 8.5 sacks in 2014-15.

Look for this group to continue developing its defensive identity in Lovie’s system, but to endure some of those same growing pains we saw throughout last year.

Bucs 2015 Betting Outlook:

At this point in the process, there’s really no questioning where this team is going to finish in the NFC South. It’s clear that this is far from the strongest division in football, but Tampa Bay isn’t just playing against subpar competition — it is subpar competition.

Expect the Bucs to finish last in the NFC South this season.

The team’s success really does hinge on whether or not Winston can adjust to the NFL game, but even if he makes a run at Offensive Rookie of the Year, it’s tough to envision a situation where any of the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers or New Orleans Saints finish with a worse record.
