St. Louis Rams vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Preview

On Sunday in the Sunshine State the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2) host the St. Louis Rams (3-3) in a game between 2 of the worst team for the last few seasons, but this one is difference, as both are still in the playoff hunt. NFL football lines have the Bucs as 2.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 38.

The Rams are sitting at .500, but all 3 of their wins have come at home and they have not won on the road since the middle of last season. They will be facing a Bucs team that does have 3 wins, but the teams that they have beat this season have been pretty weak having a grand total of 3 wins between them.

In this game the Rams can move above .500 for the first time since way back in 2006. St. Louis got killed a couple weeks back, but came back strong in their last game beating San Diego. They are playing well on both sides of the ball and are still in the wide-open NFC West race. Their pass rush has been vastly improved, as they have the 6th most sacks in the league after having the fewest sacks last season.

The big key for the Bucs in this game is their rushing defense, which ranks 2nd to last in the league in opponents’ rushing yards allowed. This week they may be in trouble facing Rams’ RB Steven Jackson, who ranks 5th in the league in rushing yards and has 2 straight 100+ yard games.

In their last games the Buccaneers were crushed by the New Orleans Saints 31-6 and the Rams beat the San Diego Chargers 20-17. Football betting

While the Rams have been solid this season covering the spread in 4 of their last 6 games they have not fared well in Tampa, as they have not covered the spread there in this last 6 games and they have not won there in almost 18 years.

The Bucs and their 18th ranked passing offense is led by 2nd year QB Josh Freeman. He is a decent QB so far in his young career and while he only has 6 TD through 5 games he only has 3 INT. He may have to carry the offense in this game since he is getting no help from the running game that ranks 27th in the league averaging only 91.2 rushing yards per game. RB Cadillac Williams has really struggled this season only picking up 2.5 yards per carry. He will be the main back in this game, but if he cannot pick up some yards early look for the pair of undrafted rookies of LeGarrette Blount and Kregg Lumpkin to get more touches.

Since Freeman will likely have to air it out for the Bucs to win their offensive line has to protect him in this game against the aforementioned solid pass rush of the Rams.

Rams’ rookie QB Sam Bradford has had a good season so far even though he has more INT’s than TD’s. (8 to 7). In the win over San Diego last week Bradford threw for 198 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT. he will have to be smart with the ball and not get picked off, as that is vital for the Rams’ success in this game. Why? Well, in the Rams 3 losses he has 6 INT’s and in their 3 wins he has 2 INT’s. While the Bucs have had their issues on defense their secondary has been solid and they are tied for 2nd in the league in INT’s (10).

Bradford will likely not have to pass much since the Bucs’ weak rushing D will get a big dose of Jackson this Sunday.

The Bucs are over .500, but I think they are not really that good with major issues on both sides of the ball. Jackson will put up some big numbers and the Rams will win their first road game of the season and move to over .500 for the first time in almost 4 years. Neither team is a high scoring one and since the Rams will rush the ball often and eat up the clock I am taking the Under in this contest as well.

Betting Trends

St. Louis is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog and they have an Under record of 7-2 in their last 9 games.
Tampa Bay is 3-13 ATS in their last 16 home games, 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home, and has an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 games at home.

Pick: Rams +3 and the Under
