St. Louis Rams vs. Detroit Lions Preview

This Sunday in an NFC game between a couple of teams that have been a couple of the worst teams for the last few years the winless Detroit Lions (0-4) host the St. Louis Rams (2-2). NFL betting lines have Detroit as a 3-point favorite in this game with a total of 43.

Both of these teams may be turning it around after being doormats for the last few years. Detroit is still without a win this season, but 3 of their 4 losses were by 5 points or less. Detroit has a good young QB in Matt Stafford, but he was injured in week 1 and since Shaun Hill took over as the starter the Lions offense has averaged 401.3 yards per game, which is 6th best in the league. However, the Detroit defense has continued to struggle both defending the pass and the run.

The Rams are .500 and tied with the Seahawks and Cardinals atop the weak NFC West. Rookie QB Sam Bradford has been solid this season and many are saying he is the best young QB to come out of the draft in some time.

Last season the Rams beat the Lions, which was their only win of the season. St. Louis has lost both of their road games this season and they have not won a game on the road since winning in Washington in week 6 of the 2008 season.

In their last games the Rams beat the Seattle Seahawks 20-3 and the Lions lost to the Green Bay Packers 28-26.

The Rams have the 19th ranked passing offense led by Bradford, who had a good game last week against Seattle going 23/41 for 289 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT. 3 of the teams he has faced this season have had weak passing defenses and Detroit does as well, as they rank 26th in the league in passing yards allowed, but last week they played well holding Aaron Rodgers and the Packers to only 169 passing yards and they had 2 INT. The Rams’ offensive line has given up 10 sacks and the one bright spot on the Lions’ D is their pass rush with 13 sacks 3 by rookie Ndamukong Suh. Putting pressure on Bradofrd is key for the Lions in this game, as if they can do that they have a good chance to win.

Rams’ RB Steven Jackson is back and while he may not be 100% he will have a good game against a weak Detroit rushing defense that ranks 25th in the league.

The Lions have the league’s 7th ranked passing offense and Shaun Hill has been solid since taking over for Stafford in week 1. However, he has more INT’s than TD’s this season and he cannot turn the ball over in this game. He and WR Calvin Johnson are a great combo and they will put up some big numbers against a Rams’ secondary that has struggled against he pass this season.

Hill may have to do it all since the Lions only have the league’s 25th ranked rushing offense. The Rams’ rushing defense has been so-so this season and Jahvid Best will struggle to pick up yards this Sunday.

In the last 3 games Hill has averaged just over 47 pass attempts per game and he will likely air it out a ton in this game. His numbers will be solid again, but he has to cut down on his INT and if he does that Detroit may get their first win of the season. However, that will not be easy against the Rams’ defense that has forced 10 turnovers this season, which is the 5th most in the league.

Detroit cannot play sloppy again like they did last week, as they were penalized 13 times for 102 yards.

Both teams are on the rise, but even though the Lions will play good on offense their D will keep them from winning. Bradford will have another good game, but Jackson is the key, as he will dominate on the ground and the lead the Rams to a win.

Trends:

St. Louis is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games against teams with a losing record and has an Under record of 6-1 in their last 7 games.
Detroit is 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 games as a home favorite and has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 home games.

Pick: Rams +3
