Sunday Night Football – San Diego vs New Orleans Betting

Headline: Saints Look For Elusive First Win at Home versus San Diego

Who would have thunk it? Not me! The New Orleans Saints look to snap a miserable four game losing streak when they host a confident Chargers team coming off a win last week in Kansas City. It’s not that the Saints have been a total disaster – it is the defense that has been absolutely dreadful and not giving its offense a chance.

Getting out of their funk won’t be easy Sunday – the Chargers are OK on both sides of the ball ahead of this Sunday Night showdown.

The San Diego Chargers have a good, not great offense. Surprisingly they are only 23rd in passing in the NFL and 17th in rushing. Does it seem that the Chargers offense has been better than that? Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates and Malcolm Floyd make up an OK passing attack and Ryan Matthews despite an average return from injury and a case of fumbleitis is a top tier back.

They are a challenge for any defense and definitely own the edge against the Saints defense.

The San Diego defense has been solid – 17th against the pass and 6th against the run. They have been an opportunistic bunch and have come together way faster than anyone predicted. Its not that they will stop Drew Brees – they just have to limit him in this game.

Don’t blame Drew Brees! He has the Saints with the 3rd best passing game in the NFL. The problem is the running game except for Darren Sproles. Where have they gone? All of you Fantasy owners know what I am talking about – no Saints rusher outside Sproles is anywhere to be seen. Drew Brees is a one man show in New Orleans and it is proving that one needs some support – seriously! [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Ugh – the New Orleans defense. Check this out – they are 24th versus the pass surrendering 276.5 yards per game, they are dead last versus the run giving up an astounding 186.75 yards per game and they give up 32.5 points per game – 29th in the NFL. These numbers are ugly and they truly reflect how bad this unit has been.

Betting Prediction:

  •  The total has gone OVER in 6 of San Diego’s last 7 games when playing New Orleans
  •  San Diego is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games
  •  San Diego is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games on the road
  •  The total has gone OVER in 9 of San Diego’s last 12 games on the road
  •  The total has gone OVER in 8 of New Orleans’s last 9 games
  •  The total has gone OVER in 6 of New Orleans’s last 7 games when playing San Diego
  •  New Orleans is 9-2 SU in its last 11 games at home
  •  The total has gone OVER in 4 of New Orleans’s last 5 games at home

The streak will end! The Saints are way too proud a team to be 0-5. New Orleans should have won last week and didn’t – their motivation should be compounded this week. San Diego has not been all that impressive this year – can’t help but think the Saints jump all over them.

Pick: New Orleans Saints -3 1/2
