The Broncos have been sensational all year long as has the Indianapolis Colts before their unflattering 16-9 loss at San Diego last week. Both the Broncos and the Colts fancy themselves as AFC Championship contenders – Sunday night’s contest should give us a better idea of exactly where these teams stand a third of the way through the NFL season.

The Denver Broncos have been terrific all year – plain and simple. The offense has been virtually unstoppable averaging a staggering 37.5 points per game. Peyton Manning is completing 74 percent of his pass attempts and with his plethora of weapons – who do you try to stop? Wes Welker, Julius Thomas, Demaryious Thomas and Eric Decker are all capable of beating you. It seems virtually impossible to shut down this passing offense – best hope is to slow them down a little. To make matters worse for their opposition Denver is converting on better than 57 percent of their third down attempts on the year.

The ground game with Knowshon Moreno is also looking good a third of the way through the season. The Broncos are averaging 3.8 yards per rush on the season – Knowshon Moreno scored three TDs last week and is another weapon for this high powered offense. Although the rushers may not rank among the elite in the NFL they serve to keep defenses thinking – so Mr. Manning can tear them apart.

Denver’s defense has been a bit of a sore spot all season long. The rank No. 24 at 26.33 PPG and their secondary allows 337.67 YPG per game through the air. But they have allowed just 37.5 yards per game on the ground this year – by far the best in the NFL mostly because other teams absolutely have to abandon the run in order to keep up! Champ Bailey will play just his second game this year and the D-line will welcome back Vonn Miller from suspension. Both should result in an immediate and sizable improvement for a unit that has been less than impressive all season long.

The Colts are a serious contender. Need proof? How about their wins over San Francisco and Seattle so far this year? Last week’s loss against San Diego seems to be the exception – not the rule. Could they have been looking forward to this week’s showdown? [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Colts have the 11th ranked offense in the game – Andrew Luck is an absolute Stud that can never be counted out of a game. There is no way he has a game like last week – good players find a way to bounce back and Luck is among the best. This team scores 24.7 points per game and has done well against two top tier defenses so far this year in Seattle and San Fran. Denver’s defense will be a welcomed as one of the easier fronts they’ve faced in 2012. Some more help from Trent Richardson would be nice!

Indianapolis’ defense has excelled against the pass, with defensive end Robert Mathis among the league’s top pass rushers. But the Colts have struggled to stop the run and rank 31st in the league in rushing yards allowed. This unit will have their hands full for sure – Indy’s offense is absolutely lethal in every aspect of the game.

Sunday Night Football Betting Prediction

:

A few trends to consider:

• Over is 12-3-1 in DEN last 16 games on fieldturf.
• Over is 7-2 in DEN last 9 road games.
• DEN are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games in October.
• IND are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 home games.
• Under is 12-4 in IND last 16 home games.
• Over is 6-2 in IND last 8 games in Week 7.

The Broncos are 1-1 ATS on the road, while the Colts are only 1-3 ATS at home. Since the Luck era began in Indianapolis, the Colts are a perfect 5-0 ATS as home underdogs.

This game will not be short on emotion – that’s for sure! The Colts will certainly be the toughest tough to date for the Broncos – I think this game has shootout written all over it. Who do YOU want in a shootout – Manning or Luck? Me too! Nobody can slow the Denver offense – I think that the Broncos D gets the occasional stop! Take the Broncos to win by a touchdown this week and for the Broncos to cover the 6 1/2.

Pick: Denver Broncos -6 1/2
