2008 Record: 4-12
ATS: 7-8-1

The Seattle Seahawks had a tumultuous season in 2008. Injuries ravaged their roster as the team mailed in their effort in head coach Mike Holmgren’s last season. With a fresh season in front of them with a new coach, the Seahawks are ready to reclaim their NFC West crown.

The Seahawks took a year off but they are back. While there are some questions on the offensive line, particularly with training camp injuries to center Chris Spencer and left tackle Walter Jones, the Seahawks still have a very deep lineup.

A healthy Matt Hasselbeck will make a world of difference as he is the leader of the team. A few targets have been added to his radar since he last suited up in a regular season game. The Seahawks developed John Carlson into one of the league’s better tight ends last year and added wide receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh in free agency.

The backfield is a concern with Julius Jones and the addition of Edgerrin James. It’s just unclear if the Seahawks will be able to run effectively but when Jim Mora Jr. and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp ran the show in Atlanta, it didn’t really matter who was in the backfield as their running games were always potent.

On defense, the Seahawks may have one of the best units in the NFC. They swapped aging linebacker Julian Peterson for standout defensive tackle Corey Redding, which really shores up a position of weakness. With Redding, a healthy Patrick Kerney and Darryl Tapp, the Seahawks have a very solid defensive line. At the second level, the Seahawks replaced Peterson with Aaron Curry, who is one of the most NFL ready rookies in the 2009 NFL Draft.

The Seahawks gave their secondary a boost when they signed Ken Lucas back to their team. With Marcus Trufant (when he’s healthy), along with Josh Wilson and former first-round pick Kelly Jennings, the Seahawks have a very good secondary as well.

Nowadays, the Seahawks defense will carry the offense – at least until the offensive line settles.

But overall, the Seahawks are the most complete team in the NFC West. Expectations were high last year before the injuries set in and they can get back there and even go further now that they’ve improved their roster.

Don’t sleep on the Seahawks this year.

A healthy Hasselback is the key. If he plays 16 games they may be able to dethrone the Cards but the Hawks will be a pass first offense. I like the addition of James but the Hawks only break .500 because they play the Rams and the Niners twice. There are too many ifs on offense to be consistent.

2 legit recieving threats (Housh and Carlson) make Seattle a sexy sleeper to win the West. The potential loss to Walter Jones for the year makes Hasselback look vulnerable. I like the offense – they seem to play the game the way its meant to be played = FUN! Defense is the big question in the Pacific Northwest. If they can gel and be a middle of the pack unit, Seattle could suprise this year. 10-6 is not out of the question.
