Season Win Totals NFL Predictions – Pittsburgh Steelers 2014 Lines

Steelers Over / Under Season Wins

The Pittsburgh Steelers head into the 2014 season looking to rebound from what was viewed as a disappointing 8-8 season last year – their second straight .500 season.

Over Under Lines

  • Over 8.5 Wins (-140)
  • Under 8.5 Wins (+110)
  • A much maligned aging defense and an inability to run the ball with any consistency has been an Achilles heel over the last couple of seasons – something that should improve this year and let the Steelers threaten to make the playoffs for the first time in three years.

The Pittsburgh Steelers brand of football is running the ball and playing strong defense – qualities that have been largely missing the last few seasons.

But the Steelers had a good draft filling some holes – linebacker Ryan Shazier was added and should provide the defense with more speed, more tenacity and more consistency while defensive end Stephon Tuitt was the best defensive end for a 3-4 defense in the class of 2014. He immediately makes the Steelers more formidable on the defensive side of the ball.

Pittsburgh was 13th in the NFL in overall defense last season – a stat that should be better with the additions – safety Mike Mitchell was also acquired through free agency and makes this team a whole lot better.

Veteran safety Ryan Clark is gone but Troy Polamalu and Ike Taylor remain to give the Steelers defense a much needed element of experience.

Offensively the Steelers made strides last year to return to the smash-mouth brand of football that has become their calling card. Le’Veon Bell is the prototypical Steelers back the addition of LeGarrette Blount will only strengthen the fear of the Pittsburgh rushing attack. Expect Pittsburgh’s bruising backs to make a statement with their overall athleticism and physicality.

And then there is Ben Roethlisberger who is worth a few wins all by himself. Receiver Emmanuel Sanders is gone to Denver but rookie Martavis Bryant has turned a few heads in camp and is threatening to become this year’s Keenan Allen. With weapons all over the field, it isn’t a stretch to see the Steelers having a top third offense in the NFL this year.

One key for Pittsburgh will be protecting Big Ben, something they haven’t been able to do with any regularity the past couple of seasons – my guess is that Coach Mike Tomlin and company have done a good job in the offseason of filling the holes on the O-line. Good defense will also be necessary – with the new additions to Dick LaBeau’s squad, we can expect the Steelers to crack the top 10 in defense yet again this year.

    Betting Prediction: 9-7

At the end of the day the Steelers look improved in every aspect of the game making them a good bet to eclipse their the eight win total from the last two seasons. I see a 9-7 record at worst for Pittsburgh this year as they play the eighth easiest schedule in the NFL. Pittsburgh should press hard for a playoff spot in the AFC.
