San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl XLIX Betting Lines & 2014 NFL Preview

2014 San Francisco Predictions

The San Francisco 49ers enter the 2014 season as third betting choice to win the Super Bowl in February. And why not? The Niners have been to the NFC Championship game three straight years; they have 10+ wins in their last three seasons and are coming off a 12-4 campaign.

The big stumbling block for the 49ers? The Seattle Seahawks whom they have to play twice and are looking like a decent bet to repeat.

Odds to win the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX: 15/2
Odds to win the 2015 NFC Conference: 9/2
Odds to Win the 2014 NFC West: +140

Let’s take a look at the numbers

The San Francisco 49ers signed Colin Kaepernick to a huge deal in the offseason and need him to take his game to another level. The 49ers aren’t that far off – Kaepernick needs to improve and he needs to learn to win in Seattle where he has been dreadful in his career. Kaepernick proved toward the end of last season that he is the real deal – winning the last six regular season games with a 108 or better passer rating. He is a huge threat to run out of the backfield but his pocket play has to get a tad better to beat the likes of Brees and Wilson in a possible Championship game.

San Francisco went out and got Wide Receiver Stevie Johnson from Buffalo – a nice piece but he possesses an eerily similar skill set to Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin who will also be in the fold. We can’t forget Vernon Davis who is also an elite pass catcher. Things seem to be set up for Colin Kaepernick to succeed in San Francisco – now it is time to execute.

Frank Gore returns off a 1,114 yard season – his seventh such 1000 yard performance in his career. There is a school of thought that Gore is going to break down at some point – we haven’t seen it yet but the punishment he’s taken just has to start taking a toll. The Niners drafted Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde with the 57th pick in the draft – he is a punishing guy and could be a factor later on.

Defensively the 49ers will be typically elite despite the loss of CB Tarell Brown, CB Carlos Rogers and S Donte Whitner – their top two cornerbacks and their starting safety.

Chris Culliver will looks to have a starting corner spot sewn up – he will play opposite of Tramaine Brock who was OK last year and exciting rookie Jimmy Ward – not great on paper.

Factor in the inevitable suspension of Aldon Smith and the injury to stud linebacker Navarro Bowman, who should return mid season and the 49ers look a little worse than they were last year. Any slight hiccup could cost the 49ers any sort of championship here – the defense could be that hiccup!

Betting Prediction:

There is no way that the San Francisco 49er don’t win 10-12 games and emerge as a favorite to win the Super Bowl this year.

The defense may take a while to get going but the offense under Colin Kaepernick will definitely be better this upcoming season.

Simply put, the Niners are a great team but unfortunately for them my guess is that their kryptonite Seattle keeps them from a Division crown, an NFC Title or a Super Bowl.
