San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary had an easy time coming in and making Mike Nolan’s mess look could but often times and interim coach struggles in the next season. While many people think that the 49ers could be a potential playoff sleeper in the NFC, there is little evidence to point to that.

The biggest issue for the 49ers on offense is the lack of an offense. Outside of Pro Bowl-caliber running back Frank Gore, the 49ers have virtually nothing.

The quarterback competition – if you can call it that – between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith is sad. Hill will win the job but Steve Young, he is not. Hill is a marginal starter who doesn’t make a ton of mistakes but he doesn’t win you ball games either. He also has alarming number of fumbles (11 in 12 games played over the last two years) although he’s lost just four.

Hill is handcuffed by a lack of weapons on the offense, which doesn’t help matters. Former first-round pick Vernon Davis is a complete bust while current first-round pick, Michael Crabtree, isn’t even signed. That leaves Hill with Josh Morgan and Isaac Bruce who are a cute tandem, but they won’t give opposing defenses nightmares.

Another lingering problem for the 49ers is their offensive line, which is weak. Since Larry Allen moved on and Jonas Jennings busted, the 49ers offensive line has crumbled.
On defense, the 49ers are equally weak on the line of scrimmage, which again is a big problem.

The 49ers still don’t have a capable nose tackle, which is arguably the most important position in the 3-4 defense. There are some studs on the defense, like linebacker Patrick Willis and cornerback Nate Clements, but on the whole, this is a defense that will have to get the job done on effort.

And that’s exact what the 49ers have: effort. Singletary gets this team to play – at least he did last year – and if he do it again, 8-8 is a possibility. But in reality, this team simply lacks talent almost everywhere on the roster.

The 49ers did finish 5-2 down the stretch of the season but when you examine who they beat – the fading Redskins, the lowly Rams twice, the crumbling Jets, the equally pathetic Bills – and you start to question whether they just took advantage of a good schedule.

If they start to tune out Singletary and his disciplinary ways wear this team down, they could be in for a very long season.

I like the Niners choice of retaining Singeltary with a young aggressive D. The health of Willis will factor greatly on their success but in a weak division they could surprise if Gore can stay healthy. Third in the NFC West

Ugh! Bill Walsh must be restless in the grave. This frachise is turning into the LA Clippers of the NFL. Without tradition, this team has nothing. Bad position players, bad chemistry, and bad attitudes will consume this team. I’d like to say that they are a year or 2 away, but I laugh at the mere suggestion.
