Both clubs have lots of room to grow from last year’s performance so whoever wins this one will be in a much better position to exceed their 2013 expectations.

This game features two quarterbacks who were rookies last year in Brandon Weeden and Ryan Tannehill. Neither were anywhere close to the ballyhooed leaders of their rookie class but we can measure them against each other after seeing them up close this weekend.

(Tannehill had the better year last year)

P.S. The Browns have lost 8 openers in a row.

Miami

The Miami Dolphins get a gift to start the season and I am shocked that this number is what it is (I would have made them 3 point favourites). The Dolphins were very good on defense last year so the focus was on giving emerging QB Ryan Tannehill more support to succeed.

Getting speedy WR Mike Wallace from Pittsburgh was an upgrade but I think they overpaid and I would have liked for them to keep versatile RB Reggie Bush who really found his game in South Beach. Still they should be able to do more on offense, especially if running back Lamar Miller lives up to his own expectations coming into the season.

Miami should look very good juxtaposed to a Cleveland team that has probably improved as well but not all that much. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

I think the Dolphins will win easily just don’t get too high on them after one week, they are at Indianapolis next week and that will be much tougher test. especially a second road game to start the season.

Cleveland

Cleveland is looking for noticeable improvement this season all over the field this season. On offense it will come if second year QB Brandon Weeden can find the guys in the Brown jerseys more often this season but he is missing WR Josh Gordon for the first couple of games due to suspension putting even more pressure on RB Trent Richardson to show why he was such a high pick.

T-Rich has great talent but he needs to stay healthy and try and make this team go the way that Adrian Peterson does in Minnesota. I am not saying he is that good but that is what this team needs.

The defense is still going to be mediocre at best. Top pick edge rusher Barkevious Mingo is doubtful and they really needed him to be a difference maker and fast otherwise the investment they made in OLB Paul Kruger from the Ravens might end up being a waste of money.
