Their chore this week – to beat a decent St. Louis Rams team and finally clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Seattle has absolutely owned the Rams in Seattle – the Hawks have won nine straight meetings at home with the Rams dating back to the 2004 Wild Card game in which the Rams emerged victorious 27-20.

Nobody would have blamed the St. Louis Rams if they just folded up their tents and looked toward next year when QB Sam Bradford went down with injury. But the Rams have responded well and have been a tough out in almost every game that they have played this year. Optimism reigns in St. Louis for next year – they own Washington’s first round pick which could end up being the #1 overall!

Kellen Clemens has filled in admirable and has completed 30 of 40 passes in his last two games for 316 yards and 2 TDs. But he had his issues last time out against the Hawks passing for just 158 yards and 2 interceptions. A task more daunting when you consider that the Hawks defense has been off the charts lately – one that had four picks last week against Carson Palmer and five the week before against Eli Manning.

The Rams will likely lean on Zac Stacy and the running game – one that has averaged 155.6 yards per game the last month. Zac Stacy has rumbled for 237 yards his last two games and has eclipsed the century mark in each. Stacy was the only effective Ram in the first meeting – he went for 134 yards on 26 carries in that game. Tavon Austin has emerged and Jared Cook still looms as a viable option.

Defensively the Rams are strong – Robert Quinn has 18 sacks on the year and there is a duo on the D-line with over 100 tackles already. St. Louis is a tad leaky in pass defense but has been stout against the run ranking seventh and allowing 102.3 yards per game.

The Seattle Seahawks are struggling in most aspects of the game ahead of Sunday’s contest – except for defense. I have mentioned the interceptions they are garnering but you can’t ignore the numbers of this defense up and down the lineup. They are #1 versus the pass, allowing 173.8 yards per game and 12th against the run allowing 107.5 yards per game. The Hawks are #1 in total defense and even better on home turf where they are aided by the 12th man.

Offensively the Hawks have had a hard time. Once the league leader in rushing offense, they have slipped to fourth and nowhere is that more evident than looking at Marshawn Lynch’s numbers. Lynch has only 3-100+ yard games this year after 10 in 2012 and he hasn’t eclipsed 100 yards in his last five. Lynch ran for just 23 yards on eight carries in the first meeting of the season between the two clubs.

Russell Wilson and the passing game have also come back down to earth a bit as of late. The team is averaging just 176 yards passing the last three games – nearly 60 yards less than they were averaging through the first 12 games of the season. Wilson has been sacked an uncharacteristic 10 times in the last three games and the team is averaging 16.7 points in their last three games after averaging 36 points per game in their prior three.

Simply put – the Hawks have some things to work on this week to prepare themselves for the playoffs!

Week 17 Football Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:
• Under is 19-6-1 in STL last 26 games in December.
• STL are 11-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
• STL are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games in Week 17.
• SEA are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games in December.
• SEA are 21-8 ATS in their last 29 games overall.
• SEA are 26-10 ATS in their last 36 vs. NFC.
• STL are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 meetings.

Seattle has lost two of their last three games overall but they have absolutely owned the Rams at CenturyLink. There is a chance that home field will already be locked up by the time the Hawks take the field Sunday meaning that some of the starters could be rested. Either way, this smells like a close game. Seattle wins but the Rams keep it close.

Pick: St. Louis Rams to cover the 10 points
