Standing in their way is the San Francisco 49ers who many envisioned battling the Hawks until the final week of the season for the NFC West crown.

Seattle has won the last two meetings between the clubs but both of those matchups have taken place in Seattle – things could be different when this game hits the Bay.

What’s not to like about the Seattle Seahawks. They are coming off an incredible 34-7 beat down of the New Orleans Saints Monday night in a game that they were able to completely stifle the unflappable Drew Brees. While the Seahawks defense took most of the early-season headlines, Russell Wilson and the Seahawks offense has come on and elevated itself to elite status.

Seattle enters Sunday as the second ranked scoring offense (28.3 points per game) and the second scoring defense (15.5 points per game).

Russell Wilson is officially in the NFL MVP hunt – any talk of a sophomore slump is in the rear view mirror. Wilson’s numbers? 2,672 yards and 22 touchdowns, 456 rushing yards and a touchdown. He can get elude the rush, stretch a play and do damage with his feet, his arm and his brain – quite a combination.

Doug Baldwin has stepped up, Golden Tate has done his part, Zach Miller has risen to the occasion and ever Jermaine Kearse has had some good games.

No longer is Seattle a run-first team although Marshawn Lynch looms as one of the most intimidating runners in the NFL. He has gone for 970 yards and nine TDs already this year and is again proving to be one of the most bruising players in the NFL.

You want some defense? The Hawks have it in spades. Seattle ranks first in both total yards and passing yards allowed per game while ranking second in points allowed per game and they are coming off a game in which they shut down one of the most prolific offenses in the game – New Orleans.

Pressure up front and stellar defensive back play has the Seahawks as one of the best Ds in the game.

The San Francisco 49ers have looked underwhelming at times but have turned the corner a bit the last six weeks or so. The Niners own the second-worst passing offense in the game although the return of Michael Crabtree to the lineup has this team looking more potent. Still every one of Colin Kaepernick’s 15 TD passes has gone to Vernon Davis or Anquan Boldin as has the bulk of his 2312 passing yards.

Kaepernick has been getting better but the 49ers are still a largely one dimensional team – Frank Gore absolutely has to be on top of his game Sunday. Gore has gone for 821 yards and eight touchdowns this year although he – at times has been invisible, just like the passing game for the Niners.

San Francisco’s defense is as advertised and better since Aldon Smith returned from “suspension”. They are third in points allowed, fifth in total yards allowed and fifth in passing yards allowed per game.

The 49ers will definitely have their hands full Sunday – absolutely everything is clicking for Seattle’s offense.

Monday Night Football Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:
• Over is 7-1 in SEA last 8 games in Week 14.
• SEA are 13-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
• Over is 12-3 in SEA last 15 games in December.
• SF are 25-8-1 ATS in their last 34 games on grass.
• Over is 8-3 in SF last 11 games in Week 14.
• SF are 19-8-1 ATS in their last 28 home games.
• Home team is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 meetings.

San Francisco is 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in its last four home games against Seattle, including a 13-6 win in San Francisco last season but they have really struggled against their better opponents – 0-4 SU and 0-3-1 ATS in losses to Seattle, Indianapolis, New Orleans and Carolina.

This is not the Seahawks of a couple of years ago going 5-1 on the road – the 2013 Hawks travel well! Look for the roll to continue for Seattle Sunday – the Niners will have a hard time stopping the Seattle offense and Seattle`s defense will make life absolutely miserable for a shaky Colin Kaepernick.

The Seahawks as underdogs? I love it!

Pick: Seattle Seahawks +2 1/2

Pick: Seattle Seahawks -4 1/2
