Sunday Night NFL Betting – Are The Eagles A Tough Matchup For The Cowboys?

The Dallas Cowboys have righted the ship with Jason Garrett and Jon Kitna running the show but Sunday Night Football presents a big challenge for them. The Philadelphia Eagles big-play offense presents plenty of problems for a leaky Cowboys defense while the Eagles blitzing schemes should force a couple of Kitna mistakes.

How Can Philadelphia Win?

Stop the run. The Cowboys have recommitted to the run under Garrett, which has kept the pressure off of Kitna and allowed them to control the pace of the game. Well, it just so happens that the Eagles are pretty good at stopping the run as they have held their last eight opponents to just 3.6 yards per carry.

If they can make Kitna throw the ball, they are going to win this game. The Eagles lead the NFL in interceptions.

On offense, the Cowboys secondary has been torched left, right and center. The Cowboys have given up 25 passing touchdowns and opposing quarterbacks have a combined passer rating of 98.4. Michael Vick and the Eagles passing game – including dynamic weapons DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin – are going to have a field day.

On both sides of the ball, this is a bad matchup for Dallas.

How Can Dallas Win?

Keep on doing what they’ve been doing: running the football. The Cowboys have played ball-control on offense the last few weeks and it has worked. Last week, they walked into Indianapolis and left with a 38-35 win.

The Cowboys stable of running backs is churning out yards and that’s a good sign. Running back Tashard Choice is heating up as he picked up 100 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries last week. If he can carry that momentum over, the Cowboys will be in good shape.

When passing the ball, the Cowboys might catch a break with the Eagles top cornerback Asante Samuel possibly being out. Even if he plays, he’s limited by a leg injury and he won’t be at full strength.

The Eagles red zone defense has been bad in recent weeks and when the Cowboys get there, they have to take advantage. Field goals might hurt them in this one.

Outlook

The Eagles are going to be very well-rested for this contest, which can make a big difference in December. They played four games in 17 days but after Thursday’s win, head coach Andy Reid gave his team an extended five days break.

Looking back through the history, the Eagles are 4-1 when coming off of a bye with Andy Reid since 2006. Furthermore, the Eagles are 50-2 when they score 30 or more and this has the appearance of a high-scoring affair.

The Cowboys will miss Dez Bryant this week if this is in fact a shootout. Their defense will struggle with Vick while the Eagles defense will give up its share of points, but Kitna will be pressured into a mistake or two, which will make the difference.

Pick: Eagles -3.5
