Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Francisco 49ers Preview

On the Sunday night game on NBC between a couple of NFC teams with some big issues the San Francisco 49ers (0-4) host the Philadelphia Eagles (2-2). NFL football lines has San Francisco as 3.5-point favorites with a total of 38.

The 49ers were the favorites to win the NFC West, but they have sputtered out of the gates losing their first 4 games and they look to avoid going 0-5 for this first time in 31 years. Things are far from well for the 49ers, as QB Alex Smith has not played well, the team fired their offensive coordinator, and their defense is not even ranked in the top 20.

The Eagles were rolling, but then last week they lost at home to Washington and lost the early season MVP candidate in Michael Vick to an injury. People in Philly are panicking even though the Eagles are still 2-2 and in first place in the tough NFC East. Many say the Eagles are in trouble, but wasn’t QB Kevin Kolb the guy that made Donovan McNabb expendable?

The 49ers have to start playing some offense, as they rank dead last in the NFC averaging 251.5 yards and 13.0 points per game. However, it is not too late to turn things around in San Francisco since the other 3 teams in the NFC West are all 2-2, but they, pretty much, have to win this game to have any chance to make the post season.

In their last games the 49ers lost to the Atlanta Falcons 16-14 and the Eagles lost to the Washington Redskins 17-12. Football betting

Heading into this NFC match up the 49ers are 2-2 ATS and the Eagles are 1-3 ATS.

Alex Smith leads the 49ers and their 18th ranked passing offense, but he has struggled this season so far, as he is tied for the league lead in INT’s, has a very low QB rating, and is only averaging 6.1 yards per pass. In last week’s loss to Atlanta Smith was 21/32 for 188 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT. Smith threw 2 INT’s in the second half of the Atlanta game and the 49ers blew a 14-0 lead in that game.

The Philadelphia defense is mediocre and while they are great at defending the pass they have had major problems stopping the run. That is not a good thing in this game, as one of the bright spots for the 49ers’ offense has been the play of RB Frank Gore, who leads the NFC in yards from scrimmage (533) and ranks 2nd in the conference with 29 receptions. He will get a ton of carries in this game and put up big numbers.

Kevin Kolb takes the reigns of the Eagles and their 12th ranked passing offense and after coming in for an injured Vick against Washington he was decent going 22/35 for 201 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. He will be facing a 49ers pass defense that is giving up an average of 227.8 points per game and gave up 259 yards in the air in the loss to Atlanta.

The 49ers’ secondary cannot give up the big play and the Eagles have a couple of big play WR’s in DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

Eagles’ RB LeSean McCoy has played well this season with 273 yards with 4 TD averaging 5.5 yards per carry and he can take a lot of pressure off Kolb if he can pick up some yards on the ground. The 49ers were awesome against the run last season, but their run defense ranks 17th this season and they have yet to force a fumble.

The 49ers only have 6 sacks this season and they need to pressure Kolb and not give him time in the pocket and they will be facing an Eagles’ offensive line that has given up the 2nd most sacks in the league (15).

Gore is the key in this game, as he will play well and I think Smith will not air it out much and limit his mistakes with the ball, as if he does not he may not be the starter next week. San Francisco will come out and play well on both sides of the ball and get this first win of the season and cover the spread.

Trends:

Philadelphia is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games, 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games against teams from the NFC, and has an Over record of 12-5 in their last 17 games as a road underdog.
San Francisco is 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games against teams in the NFC, and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.

Pick: 49ers -3.5
