The Detroit Lions will try and make it two wins in a row when they travel to the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey for a Sunday afternoon game against the New York Giants. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast regionally on Fox.
Detroit is coming off its largest margin of victory in 15 years with a 44-6 pasting of St. Louis last Sunday. The Lions were a three-point home favorite and the total went ‘over’ the 43 ½ point line. This was the Lions first win of the season and it moved them to 1-4 straight-up and 4-1 against the spread. They are 0-3 SU and 1-2 ATS on the road and the total has gone ‘over’ in three of their first five games.
The Lions proved they can be quite a force when they put it all together but that was against the Rams and this week they are playing the resurgent Giants. Matthew Stafford will miss his fifth straight game after injuring his shoulder in Week 1 so Shaun Hill will once again be Detroit’s starting quarterback for this game. In four previous starts he has completed 109-of 174 attempts for 1130 yards and eight TD’s. He has also thrown six interceptions and been sacked seven times.
Detroit’s offense is actually ranked 17th overall and sixth in points per game. Defensively it is a whole other story as the Lions are ranked near the bottom of the league in just about every major category.
New York got off to a shaky start but has righted the ship over the past two weeks. First the Giants pummeled Chicago 17-3 as a 3 ½ point home favorite and then they whipped Houston 34-10 as a three point road underdog. They are now 3-2 both SU and ATS and tied with Washington and Philadelphia for first place in the NFC East. New York is 2-1 SU and ATS at home and the total has stayed ‘under’ in three of its first five games.
The common theme in both of the Giants last two games has been a relentless defense that combined for 13 sacks, four forced fumbles, and one interception while giving up a total of just 13 points during this time span. As a unit they are ranked first overall; first against the pass and ninth against the run. Giant QB Eli Manning is still struggling a bit with eight touchdown passes and eight interceptions, but WR Hakeem Nicks is starting to emerge as his new go-to target. Hicks has 33 receptions for 409 yards and six TD’s in his first five games.
The Lions are just 1-6 ATS in their last seven games following a SU win, while the Giants are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games following a SU win. A few things in Detroit’s favor is that the underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five games between these two teams and the road team is 5-0 ATS in the last five games.
