The Bengals have clearly turned their organization around from when it was the laughing stock of the league, but now they are looking to take the next step. Two times in the last four years they have had home field advantage in the first week of the playoffs, but they haven’t won a playoff game yet.

By now, everyone has heard that the Bengals added Terrell Owens in the offseason and now will have both Chad Ocho Cinco and Terrell Owens on the same squad. This tandem means two things: defensive backs will have their hands full with the Bengals receivers, and the Bengals coaching staff will have their hands full with their own wide receivers. Carson Palmer was short on weapons last year, but that should not be the case at all in 2010. Jermaine Gresham looks ready to be a force at the tight end spot, which will provide a nice option over the middle of the field. In order to be successful again the Bengals must keep their running game going that dominated last year, but they also need a bit more balance in the offense.

The Bengals defense has stepped up in a huge way over the past few years, and this unit is the primary reason the Bengals were so solid in 2009. The linebackers are very good with Dhani Jones, Keith Rivers, and Rey Maualuga all roaming around the field with great quickness. The secondary of the Bengals is a strength as Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph form one of the better cornerback tandems. The safety spots are a bit of a question, and the addition of Adam “Pacman” Jones could help or hurt this team depending on how he acts. The Bengals defense should be solid again in 2010. New England

The Patriots were the clear favorite every year to win the Super Bowl for a while, but Belichek and Brady’s team has taken some small steps backward in the last couple years. There is no doubt they are still a contender, but they aren’t the dynasty they once were.

The offensive line used to be a huge strength for the Patriots, but now it is a question mark. Tom Brady is still absolutely great when healthy, but he has battled quite a few injuries of late. The running back spot is full of depth, but there is no superstar. Wes Welker’s injury hurt this team mightily in 2009, and they need him healthy this year. Rob Gronkowski is shaping up to be a great pickup by the Patriots as Tom Brady seems to have found a great comfort level with him in the preseason. This offense is still extremely good, but there are a few more questions than there have been in the past.

The New England defense has a bit of a new look this year, but they appear to be ready for a solid season. Jerod Mayo had a sensational rookie year last year, and the addition of Brandon Spikes should be great for this defense. Brandon Meriweather has turned into a play maker at the back of the defense. The pass rush needs to improve for New England in 2010, and that is exactly why the team signed Derrick Burgess.

The Pick:

This looks like a very intriguing first game to me. The Bengals have a tough schedule this year, but should be solid. The Patriots are looking to prove that they are still one of the top contenders in the AFC. I think the best play in this game is on the over 44.5. Both offenses should be able to move the ball well through the air.

Cincinnati vs. New England Score Prediction: New England 28 Cincinnati 24
