Things are pretty bad in Jetsland right now. At 3-6 they are pretty much out of the race for the playoffs this year and the way they are playing invites more questions than answers.

New York Jets

They have lost three in a row and the last two weeks have been badly outplayed by Miami and Seattle, hardly the league’s elite teams.  They should be motivated to come after St. Louis but the more you look at this team you wonder if they have the talent needed to succeed.

QB Mark Sanchez is a lightning rod and deservedly so.  Still, you can easily argue that he has one of the worst collection of skill position talent to work with and that was even before receiver Santonio Holmes went on IR.

Also out for the season is cornerback Darelle Revis which is why it is surprising that the Jets are ranked 6th against the pass.  The fact that they are so easy to run on – 30th – could have something to do with it.

Despite underperforming the Jets are 5-4 ATS this season.  They have lost 5 of their last 6 and are absolutely desperate for a win this week.  You almost can’t play this team as a favourite but as the underdog they are intriguing.  The smart play is to pass but their is some logic in fading the Rams who are not all that good either. St. Louis

The Rams were looking surprisingly good early in the year but with three losses and the rare tie in the last 4 games they have found the level many expected.  They have made some baby steps on defense in coach Jeff Fisher’s first season but the offensive ineptitude is still keeping them from being competitive consistently.  It says a lot about this team that that tie against San Francisco might be their best game of the season.

Is is too harsh to call QB Sam Bradford just a slightly better Blaine Gabbert.  All I see is a player too concerned about not making mistakes instead of trying to make plays.  He is not blessed with great surrounding talent but he was a #1 overall pick so he should be a difference maker, right?  Running back Steven Jackson is again playing the good soldier.  They pounded away at San Francisco with him, giving him the most carries he has seen since week 1.  It is a smart way to go.

The Rams are a hard team to like as a favourite.  In fact this will be the first time they have been in this role all season long.  Which kind of tells you a lot about both teams really.  That half point is really tricky because I do like the Rams to emerge victorious but probably not by much.  This definitely feels like a 20-17 kind of game.

Spread Pick: New York Jets +3.5
