The New Orleans Saints hang in the NFC playoff picture by an invisible thread but there is no doubt that they are a motivated team playing their best football of the season as evidenced by a 41-0 beat down of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. The Saints head out on the road looking to play spoiler and looking like the best team in recent memory in this role.

New Orleans comes into Sunday’s game with the second best passing game in the NFL with an average of 298.07 yards per game. They are a disappointing 24th versus the run however averaging under 100 yards per game. New Orleans scores 27.79 points per game, good for 4th in the NFL.

Drew Brees has completed 62 percent of his passes with 36 touchdowns and 18 interceptions while being sacked 24 times.

The Saints are loaded in the backfield With Mark Ingram averaging 4.1 yards per carry, Pierre Thomas averaging 4.7 yards per carry and Darren Sproles averaging 5.4 yards per carry and catching 60 passes with six touchdowns. Jimmy Graham has 69 catches and eight touchdowns, Marques Colston has 68 catches and eight touchdowns, and Lance Moore has 57 catches.

Defensively New Orleans continues to be an absolute mess. The Saints are second last in both pass and run defense and they give up 27.07 points per game – 27th in the NFL. Dallas has been scoring some points lately so expect New Orleans to be under siege.

The Dallas Cowboys have won three straight games to climb up off the mat and into the playoff picture. Have the wins been impressive? Not necessarily. But they have been “Ws”. Tiebreakers do not favor Dallas in any scenario – winning out is the only chance they have at the post season.

Dallas enters Sunday’s showdown with the 4th best passing offense in the NFL but with the 31st ranked running game averaging just 80.36 yards per game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The passing attack has been money with Tony Romo playing at a very high level, Dez Bryant taking his game to another level and Jason Witten being the most dependable security blanket in the NFL. The Cowboys are dangerous through the air and steadily improving on the ground as DeMarco Murray has played his way back into game shape.

Dallas has been limiting turnovers as of late too – interceptions and fumbles were Cowboy killers early in the season.

Defensively, Dallas is the quintessential middle-of-the-road team despite the immense talent on this team. They are 14th against the pass and 15th versus the run. Dallas gives up 24.14 points per game – good for 21st in the NFL.

The defense will need to come up with one of their better games of the season – New Orleans’s offense has been and continues to be one of the best in the land!

Betting Prediction:

A few trends to consider:

• New Orleans is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing Dallas
• The total has gone OVER in 13 of New Orleans’s last 19 games
• The total has gone OVER in 6 of New Orleans’s last 9 games on the road
• The total has gone UNDER in 8 of New Orleans’s last 12 games when playing Dallas
• Dallas is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games
• The total has gone OVER in 5 of Dallas’s last 6 games at home
• The total has gone OVER in 4 of Dallas’s last 6 games
• The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Dallas’s last 12 games when playing New Orleans

The underdog has covered in the last seven meetings between the two teams and I think the same happens here.

The Dallas defense has shown serious cracks this season particularly in the passing game – something that Drew Brees and company will certainly exploit. New Orleans is a proud team coming off by far their most impressive win this year.

In a track meet I like them to outscore Dallas and send the Cowboys reeling out of the playoff picture. The Cowboys luck runs out Sunday and maybe so does Jason Garrett’s job!

Pick: New Orleans Saints +1
