For a second offseason in a row, the Saints have put their entire focus on improving their defense and considering the allowed the third-most plays of 20 yards or longer last year, the strategy was a good one.
The Saints spent a first-round pick on cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and signed veteran defensive backs Darren Sharper and Jabari Greer. They also brought in respected defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to run the show.
While the Saints might be without their two top-flight defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith for the first four games (suspension), the defense should be significantly better the other 12 games.
Even if they improve slightly from pathetically incompetent to mediocre, that could make a big difference for a team loaded with one of the best offenses.
As impressive as the Saints offense was last year, many people don’t mention the fact that they didn’t really miss much of a beat without a healthy Reggie Bush or Marques Colston.
While they were out last year, the Saints developed a few other nice complementary weapons, such as running back Pierre Thomas and slot receiver Lance Moore. Now if the Saints can get some consistency out of speedy wideouts Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem, the Saints will be the highest-scoring offense in the league.
One other key point to note is that the Saints finished last in the NFC South last year so they’ll get a couple of gift games (vs Detroit and at St. Louis), which is a big deal when you consider that division-mates Carolina and Atlanta have very difficult schedules.
With a lethal offense and a defense that’s catching up, the Saints will be back in the playoffs as the NFC South champ in 2009.
Super Bowl Odds: +2050
Conference Odds: +1200
NFC South Odds: +185

Brees is this team. If Bush and Colston can stay on the field this team can win any shootout. Brees has to continue his elite play over the past 2 years for the Saints to have any hope. The defense need to be better to compete in the NFC. 2nd in the NFC South
I like this team to win the south. Maybe because I love teams that win 35-28 games. Other reasons include All-world Brees, the health of argueably 2 of the to 20 offensive weapons in the NFL (Colston and Bush), and a front offense that truely saw a glaring need (Defense) and addressed it. Gonna be a huge year indeed.
