It may only be the preseason, but the Patriots and Saints do not like losing regardless of what time of year it is. Unfortunately for the squads, they dropped their first games of the preseason. It’s time for both teams to test the rookies they drafted to help bolster their lackluster defenses.

In what used to be a popular Super Bowl matchup prediction, the Patriots and the Saints are ready to do battle down in the bayou.

New England Patriots

The storyline hasn’t changed once this offseason or preseason for the Patriots. News of Tom Brady’s suspension and his appeal are the main storylines not just in New England, but around the NFL. This will give the Saints a healthy dose of Jimmy Garoppolo as he prepares to fill in for Brady during his suspension to start the season.

Not being talked about are the incoming rookies, because let’s face it – preseason is each team’s chance to evaluate their new guys. The defensive line was bolstered with the drafting of DT Malcolm Brown. He’s big, but versatile and can play in multiple roles and situations.

Bill Belichick definitely went after some offensive line help this year, drafting C Shaq Mason and OT Tre’ Jackson. The Patriots are known for letting Brady carry games with his arm, but they have been trying to transition to a more balanced offense the last couple years. The additions of Mason and Jackson, run blocking specialists, are a clear indicator of those intentions.

Keep an eye on RB Jonas Gray who is vying for Shane Vereen’s spot as a versatile running back with above average receiving skills.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints offseason decisions are still being talked about during the preseason. Trading Jimmy Graham to Seattle was a huge gamble and a nod to Orson Charles, who is likely to become his replacement. Trading Kenny Stills to Miami was another questionable move, but when you have Drew Brees, anyone in this offense can step up.

In the Seattle deal, the Saints received C Max Unger, a big gain on an offensive line that was shoddy at best. Adding to the offensive line in the draft, the Saints went and grabbed OT Andrus Peat who will probably step right into a starting role protecting Brees and rookie QB Garrett Grayson.

On defense, the Saints stocked up. With injuries leaving many defensive position groups with massive holes, they went and drafted solid linebackers in Stephone Anthony and Hau’oli Kikaha. The secondary got a big boost with the drafting of CB PJ Williams.

There are a lot of questions this preseason with the Saints, but one thing is for certain – with Drew Brees still around, this team is going to compete.

NFL Betting Trends:

Saints are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall
Saints are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games
Saints are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games on fieldturf
Patriots are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 games on fieldturf
14-6 ATS last 20 in Week 2 of preseason

4* NFL Betting Prediction: Patriots +1

It may be a home game for the Saints in which they’re favored, but they are going to see a lot of starter Garoppolo in this game.

NFL Score Prediction: New England 30 – New Orleans 24

With both defenses trying to figure things out, the offenses will get to have a little fun in this one.
