It wasn’t very long ago that when the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings met, it was a battle between two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks, with the intriguing sidebar of mentor versus student and all of the excitement that went down in Wisconsin along the way. For years it was Aaron Rodgers learning behind Brett Favre in Green Bay.

Then, it became Rodgers versus Favre with so much on the line for a couple of projected Super Bowl contenders.
Now, with Favre out of the equation and the failed Donovan McNabb era in Minnesota pretty well done, the undefeated Packers and Vikings will renew their rivalry on Monday Night Football with a different look to the quarterback battle.
Enter Christian Ponder, the former Florida State quarterback and first round pick that has been handed the keys to the Vikings’ starting position after watching from the sidelines for the first few weeks of the season. To say that Ponder was not ready when he was asked to start would not be far from the truth, although he has shown improvement with every passing week as the No. 1 guy.
Ponder can learn something from Rodgers, who is undoubtedly the frontrunner to win the league MVP this season with 2,619 passing yards and 24 touchdowns for an incredible 124.9 league-leading passer rating. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Calm and poised in the pocket, there is no throw that Rodgers can’t make, and he continues to get better while surrounded by one of the strongest receiving cores in the NFL. Rodgers has perhaps been the key to Green Bay’s eight straight wins to start the season, and he will need to continue to play at an elite level to keep that streak going.
Where the Packers could be vulnerable is on the defensive side of the ball, where they will be forced to deal with one of the best players in the game today in running back Adrian Peterson. Peterson has rushed for 795 yards and nine touchdowns this season, and as he proved in the win over the Arizona Cardinals is entirely capable of taking over games on his own.
Ponder will not be asked to do too much again this week as the coaches continue to hold him back, but he will need to execute when called upon. If he does, then the Vikings should be able to make this one competitive, but it is hard to bet against Rodgers and the Packers considering the way that they are playing right now as the rivalry continues.
