New Orleans Saints vs. Carolina Panthers Preview

On the season the Saints are 3-4 ATS and they have an O/U record of 6-1 and the Panthers are 5-3 ATS and they have an O/U record of 5-3.

This season the Panthers are 2-2 at home and the Saints are 0-4 on the road.

In their last games the Saints had their best game of the season in their 44-23 win over the Green Bay Packers while the Panthers lost their 2nd straight falling to the Seattle Seahawks 13-9.

Before their last game the Saints were at 2-4 and things did not look good for them. However, they responded by spanking the Packers, snapping their 4-game winning streak, and they can take over first place in the NFC South with a win this Thursday night over the slumping Carolina Panthers.

Carolina got off to a good 2-0 start, but they are winless in their last 3 games and have lost their last 2. They have only averaged 13 ppg in their last 2 games, but they did play decent defense in their loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in their last game.

Last season each team won at home splitting the 2-game series.

Drew Brees passed for over 300 yards in the Packers gave with 3 TD and he was not picked off. TE Jimmy Graham had a TD pass in the game and he is joined by a solid WR corps so the Panthers and their 18th ranked pass defense will have their hands full. Carolina did hold the Seahawks to under 200 passing yards in the loss last week.

Carolina ranks in the middle of the pack (17th) in sacks and they only had 1 last week. If the cannot pressure Brees in the pocket they may be in big trouble in this division match up.

With New Orleans without a couple of RB’s Mark Ingram got the start against Green Bay and he made the most of it with a career high 172 rushing yards. The Panthers have had issues defending the run all season, where they rank 28th, and in the Seattle game they gave up 119 yards on the ground.

The Saints’ pass defense ranks 2nd to last in the league and in the win over Green Bay they gave up 402 passing yards. However, they did have 2 picks and only allowed 1 TD and on top of that they sacked Aaron Rodgers 3 times. Cam Newton has an INT in each of the last 4 games and he has not put up solid numbers in the last 2. His top 2 targets in WR Kelvin Benjamin and TE Greg Olson each has over 500 receiving yards on the season.

The Saints’ run D has been solid this season and they held the Packers to 89 rushing yards. Jonathan Stewart is the lead RB for Carolina, with Newton ranking 2nd on the team in rushing yards, and while he has not lit it up this season he had a good game on the ground in the loss to the Seahawks.
