Detroit Lions vs. Atlanta Falcons Preview

On the season the Lions are 4-3 ATS and they have an O/U record of 2-5 and the Falcons are 2-5 ATS and they have an Under record of 3-4.

This Lions are 3-1 at home and the Falcons are 0-4 on the road.

In their last games the Lions beat the New Orleans Saints 24-23 and the Falcons lost to the Baltimore Ravens 29-7.

The wheels have fallen off for the Falcons, who have lost 4 straight, but with Carolina leading the NFC South at 3-3 Atlanta still has a shot to get back in the race. They are the 3.5-point underdog in this game being held in jolly old England.

The Lions are coming off a big win over the New Orleans Saints and they have won 4 of their last 5 including their last 2. The Lions have Matthew Stafford and a solid passing attack, but the reason the Lions have been winning is their defense, which ranks 7th in the league against the pass and 2nd against the run.

Things looked bleak for the Lions in their last game against the Saints, but they got a key INT late and came back from 13 down with 2 TD’s in the last 3:38. Stafford was playing without his top receiver in the injured Calvin Johnson and he had the 2 TD passes late in the game. Overall, he passed for 299 yards with 2 TD and 2 INT.

Johnson may be back for this game, which would not be good for an Atlanta pass defense that ranks 29th in the league. Even if Johnson does not play the Falcons will have to worry about Golden Tate, who had 154 receiving yards and a TD in the win over the Saints.

Stafford did not get much help from the run game in the New Orleans win, as the Lions only rushed for 59 yards. The Lions rank 2nd to last in the NFL in rushing yards per game and lead rusher Joique Bell is only averaging 3.3 yards per carry. However, he has a good chance to have a good game facing a Falcons run defense that ranks 27th in the league and gave up 123 yards on the ground in their loss to the Ravens.

Matt Ryan has been one of the bright spots for the Falcons this season and he has a great WR duo in Roddy White and Julio Jones. However, Ryan only had 228 passing yards in the loss to the Ravens and he was sacked 5 times. The Atlanta offensive line must protect their QB better, as he is not mobile and the Falcons are really struggling to run the ball this season.

In the win over the Saints the Detroit defense played well against the run, but they gave up 335 passing yards.

Steven Jackson has not played well all season and in the Baltimore loss he only had a grand total of 22 yards on 8 carries. If he cannot run the ball in this game Ryan will have to carry the team with his arm and with the defense the Falcons have he may have to light up the scoreboard.
