2009 Record: 14-2
ATS: 10-6

There’s a very simple reason the Indianapolis Colts finished their 2009 season by playing for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. This Colts roster may be the most talented offense the NFL has seen since the Dallas Cowboys dynasty of the early 1990s.

The Colts are deeper than any team at wide receiver with Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garçon, and Austin Collie all competing for catches – and that’s before Anthony Gonzalez returns from injury.

The Colts balanced this out with one of the top pass-catching tight ends in the league (Dallas Clark) and a running game that was solid in relying on Joseph Addai. Last year, the Colts even complemented that by adding former UConn standout Donald Brown.

Combine all those attributes with one of the most consistent offensive lines in the league and this year, even despite the loss of guard Ryan Lilja, Indianapolis still seems poised to have a truly great offense led by arguably the best field general in the game today. Last season Peyton Manning accounted for 34 touchdowns. Looking at this roster, it’s easy to see how he could duplicate or even trump that total in 2010.

Of course, the problem with the Colts throughout the Manning era has never been their offense, and this year looks to be no exception. The losses of defensive back Marlin Jackson (Philadelphia) and linebacker Freddie Keiaho (Jacksonville) hurt, mostly because it doesn’t look like there are immediate replacements waiting in the wings.

Add to that the fact that safety Bob Sanders is perhaps the best player in the league who can’t seem to stay healthy enough to be on the field, and the Colts figure to have some games where the defense just can’t get it done.

Indianapolis did, however, add defensive end Jerry Hughes from TCU in the draft, someone almost every NFL team should have wanted to put on their roster. If he can help balance out the attention Dwight Freeney sees, Hughes can bring more pressure from the Colts’ defensive line and could help mask how thin Indy’s secondary seems to be.

It should also be noted that, even though it was late, for the first time in a long time the Colts tried to address the return game in the draft.

Manning works a long field as well as anybody, but that doesn’t mean he should have to on every series. If the Colts can improve their field position this year, scary as this may sound, expect even better numbers from Manning and Co. as the return of Adam Vinatieri from injury makes Indianapolis that much more dangerous as a scoring force.

Like the rest of their division the Colts draw the NFC East in interconference games. Based on their Super Bowl appearance last year, the Colts have a pretty daunting schedule in 2010.

Yet, it’s difficult to see this team losing more than three games or so this year unless injuries take their toll.

Colts 2010 Outlook

The Colts will be found in the divisional playoff round; one does wonder if they can get back to the Super Bowl after the long grind of their 2009 season.
