NFL Lines – Trench Warfare – Pittsburgh versus Tennessee

The Pittsburgh Steelers, fresh off a hard fought 15-10 victory travel to Tennessee to take on a motivated Titans team that destroyed Oakland last week. The Steelers haven’t fared well in Tennessee lately, but they did win at home against Tennessee 13-10 in the only meeting between the two last year.

The Pittsburgh Steelers cleared one major hurdle and won the first of four games without Ben Roethlisberger. Now they travel to Tennessee, where they have won just once since 2001 – they are 1-8 during that span. It will likely be a low scoring affair, meaning that the offense will once again take a back seat to the defense.

Dennis Dixon was OK at quarterback on Sunday. He was 18 for 26 for 236 yards and most importantly, he avoided any game changing mistake. Not bad for a pivot that was ranked #3 on the depth chart. He will likely be asked to simply manage the game and feed Rashard Mendenhall once again.

Rashard Mendenhall did the bulk of the heavy lifting in Week 1 and you can expect that to continue for the first four weeks of the season. He ran the ball 20 times for 120 yards including the 50 yard scamper in overtime. Mendenhall figures to be a huge part of the offense against Tennessee – to move the chains, to eat up clock and to keep Chris Johnson and the Tennessee offense off the field.

Troy Polamalu was back anchoring the defense and what a difference he made. Polamalu is a difference maker and will have to be in top form in order to keep the Titans running game in check.

The Tennessee Titans made sure that the rest of the AFC South took notice of their Week 1 performance. They were the better team in every aspect of the game against Oakland and they hope to take that momentum into their showdown with Pittsburgh.

The Tennessee offense operated exactly the way Coach Jeff Fisher dreams about in Week 1. They rushed the ball for 205 yards and Vince Young was only asked to attempt 17 passes. Young did complete 13 of those 17 attempts for 154 yards and two touchdowns – a 148.2 passer rating! Young looks good – that’s for sure!

Chris Johnson has another ho-hum game. Another 142 yards and two touchdowns makes it 12 straight games that he has reached 100 yards. Things will be a lot tougher against Pittsburgh however. Even though Oakland focused on him, Johnson was still able to deliver a Stud performance.

Tennessee’s defense looked good as well. They generated four sacks and brought pressure all game long in Week 1. This unit could be back and ready to reestablish themselves as a top NFL unit.

NFL Lines Prediction:

This game will likely be low scoring with the offensive and defensive lines determining the outcome. Pittsburgh is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 on the road and is 3-6 ATS in September games. However, Tennessee is 12-25 in their last 37 when favored at home. Still, Chris Johnson is the best player on either team and despite Pittsburgh’s insane defense; he will do enough for the Titans to win. 5 points may be a bit rich, but worth the gamble.

NFL Lines Pick: Tennessee Titans -5

Being that I am an avid Steelers fan, I am always ready to stand firm and stick up for my guys. Even though we haven’t faired very well in Tennessee, recent years have shown improvement on attacking the Tennessee running game. My number 43 (we all know who he is) is beyond question and arguably so, one of the greatest safeties to ever step on the field. I can see this being another game just like the Dallas vs. Pittsburgh showdown when (who else but) #43 made the game winning interception to hurl the Steelers to victory against Dallas. Would love to hear your thoughts on my brief analysis.

Hi! I don’t think the steelers are going to do it this time around pal. This Titan team is one of the best they have had since they arrived in Nashville 11 years ago. They will take the Steelers 27- 17.

I’m a Steelers fan, I can see the Titans getting the win, the Steelers have never done well in Nashville, but Chris Johnson is the best player on either team? Maybe the best offensive player, but Troy Polamalu is the best player on either team. The Steelers have always managed to hold Chris Johnson to under 100 yards, and I see no reason why they won’t do so this time. The Titans are overrated, and, after starting last season 0-6, they managed to win against mostly mediocre teams; their victories came against Buffalo, Jacksonville, St. Louis, Seattle, SF. The Titans got dealt the worst blow out in NFL history by New England last year. So in week one they beat up on the Raiders. That doesn’t make them great, not by a long shot. The Titans though are a solid team. The Steelers are hobbled with Dennis Dixon starting, but he does have great receivers in Hines Ward and Mike Wallace–nobody on the Titans defense is faster than Wallace. I agree, this should be a low scoring game.
