Week 3: 49ers vs Cardinals Picks

NFL Week 3 Betting action sees the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday September 21st at University of Phoenix Stadium. Cappers Picks provides free NFL handicapping tips all season long.

Don’t let the NFC West division fool you for a minute: the Arizona Cardinals are a very, very good ballclub. When they have all their personnel, they can play with anyone on offense and defense, and would likely be a high playoff seed if the Cards played in the AFC. But they’re likely missing their starting QB…

With Carson Palmer, the Cards have a strong-armed veteran QB that will throw a few picks, but launch the ball into the endzone and earn you some wins in the process.

Back-up QB Drew Stanton is second-string for a reason. He doesn’t have good accuracy and, despite his athleticism, it’s the accuracy that brings the boys to the yard in this league. Arizona’s offense will undoubtedly take a hit if Palmer can’t go on Sunday with nerve trouble in his throwing shoulder.

The 49ers lost a tough game to the Bears last week at home and they’ll be looking to redeem themselves this weekend. For all the ink spilled about the Niners and the reigning Super Bowl champ Seattle Seahawks, it’s Arizona that ranks first in the NFC West at 2-0.

Both of these clubs can exhibit formidable defense, with stars like DE Calais Campbell and CB Patrick Peterson for ‘Zona and DE Justin Smith and LB Patrick Willis for San Fran.

Still, liking Arizona in this tilt hinges on Palmer’s health. He needs to feeling well enough to not just play, but play well for Arizona to beat the perennially-contending 49ers.

Arizona has a speedy threat in RB Andre Ellington and a strong WR duo with Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd, but they are rendered less effective with Stanton directing things.

San Francisco counters with steady veteran RB Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde, a rookie who looks like he’s got next when Gore finally does decide to hang ’em up.

With these two strong defenses and with Chicago QB Jay Cutler putting on a clinic versus the Niners in Week 2, look for both defenses to play savagely in the desert. Points could be at a premium in this divisional game.

NFL Betting Trends

  • SF are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 road games.
  • SF are 28-12-1 ATS in their last 41 games on grass.
  • Over is 7-2 in ARI last 9 vs. NFC West.
  • ARI are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
  • SF are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 meetings in Arizona.
  • SF are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 meetings.

It’s hard to totally rule on this result before we see Palmer’s status as late as Sunday morning, but as it stands now, it looks unlikely that Palmer will play. Arizona has a bye week coming up and it’d be prudent to rest Palmer until they come back from that bye, especially currently sitting 2-0.

With Stanton at the helm, put your money on the visiting 49ers in this exciting afternoon game.
