It’s a cross-conference clash on Sunday when the Rams travel to KC to take on the Chiefs. Both teams are coming off impressive victories a week ago and will be looking to build on that to salvage their hopes to make a post-season appearance.

The playoff window is fairly narrow for both as neither has a plus .500 record but a win in week 8 will surely provide a boost.

Rams

St. Louis pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the season a week ago in their 28-26 victory over their NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks. Not only did the Rams pull off the win but they did it in style, with a tricky 90 yard punt return TD and a fake punt late in the fourth quarter from deep in their own territory.

Trick plays aside, the Rams played a solid football game against a good team last week and they deserve full marks for their efforts. QB Austin Davis didn’t put up crazy numbers with just 155 yards passing, but he was very good at taking care of the ball, completing 17 of 20 passes for two TDs and no interceptions against a highly touted secondary.

The game almost got away from the Rams who carried a 21-6 lead into the half, but the defense held strong and the offense was able to sustain some drives to tack field goals on the board and secure the win at home.

Chiefs

Do not sleep on the Chiefs. Their 3-3 record is a bit deceiving and they are better than what their win-loss total shows.

Like many, I projected KC to take a bit of a slide from their stellar year last season, but I think this team can still contend for a wild card spot in the AFC.

I hate to use the phrase “must win game” before week 12, but for the Chiefs, this week is a huge game.

The AFC West seemed to be a runaway two horse race between the Broncos and Chargers, but with San Diego narrowly beating Oakland three weeks ago and now dropping their last two games, the door has been left swinging open for the Chiefs to close the gap on second in the division.

Denver is still going to walk away with the West, but the Chiefs can put themselves back in contention this week. Take away a very bad opening week loss to Tennessee, the Chiefs’ only two losses have come against Denver on the road and San Francisco on the road.

They have wins over the Chargers on the road and a home demolishing of the New England Patriots to go along with a beating of the Miami Dolphins.

KC hasn’t played a home game in almost a month, and the last time they played at Arrowhead it was in the aforementioned slaughter of the Pats way back on September 29. QB Alex Smith has been his usual, not flashy but efficient self of late, throwing for 813 yards and eight TDs with just one pick over his last four games.

Even with the 30th ranked passing game in the NFL (under 200 yards per game) the run game of Jamaal Charles has kept Smith insulated and not forced him to win games on his own.

Week 8 Rams vs. Chiefs 4* Free Pick

Going into San Diego and beating the Chargers has given the Chiefs a lot of love from odds makers who have them as a favourite by a touchdown. The Rams still aren’t getting much credit after beating Seattle (who seem to be in a bit of a spiral right now).

Given the way the Chiefs played their last time they were at home I’m leaning to them to come away with a pretty comfortable victory in this one.

Take the Chiefs.
