Football season is finally upon us as the annual Hall of Fame game approaches. This might not be real football just yet but we are getting closer.

Optimism is eternal as we get set for the first preseason game of 2015.

Pittsburgh

The Steelers have to like their chances coming into 2015. The AFC North is expected to be just as competitive as ever but Pittsburgh should be right in the mix. The key is getting off to a good start even though they are going to be without their leading runner Le’veon Bell.

This team definitely has more answers on the offensive side with or without him early.

On defense things are not nearly as clear. Over the past few seasons this group has aged and some familiar faces are gone. They are going to have to address this if they want to become a contender and have started doing so by drafting Bud Dupree in the first round this season.

If he is the next great Steeltown LB it will go a long way.

There is no more vanilla game than this one so we won’t really know much about what to expect from Pittsburgh no matter what we see in this one. I know pre-season football is not that meaningful, especially this extra game that teams play this weekend but

Minnesota

Last season was lost early when Adrian Peterson wasn’t able to live up to the moral standards of the league.

With him out indefinitely it made it easy for the Vikings to make 2014 a development year, which made a lot of sense given they were trying to see what they had in first round pick Teddy Bridgewater.

So far the early returns are pretty good. Bridgewater is a gamer and further along than I think the team even thought. Now with Peterson back in the fold he can continue to develop with an actual threat of a running game.

On defense the Vikings are OK but their ceiling is not very high. That combined with an offense with limited explosiveness is why they are not expected to do all that much this season.

I think a .500 season would be pretty good for this group and they should get better as the season progresses.

NFL Football Betting Trends:

  • Under is 3-0-1 in Steelers last 4 games overall.
  • Steelers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
  • Vikings are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
  • Vikings are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games on fieldturf.

4* NFL Betting Pick: Pittsburgh +3.5

Its the first game of the season so don’t get carried away.   If this was the regular season the Steelers would be the favourite so I am not totally buying they should be a dog here.

NFL Score Prediction:  Pittsburgh 24 – Minnesota

Pre-season football is truly gambling unless you are a real pro at it.  I would just enjoy this one from afar and use it as a study aide.
