This is the first in division game for any NFC North team, and this game will be a definite tone setter for who is going to jump up and grab hold of the title of team to beat.

The Packers bounced back from a week one defeat, squeaking out a narrow win over the Jets last week.

The Lions took a step backwards last week getting rolled by the Carolina Panthers, to level their record at 1-1. With the other two division foes squaring off outside of the North, the winner of this one will grab the early tie breaker.

Packers

Green Bay remains somewhat of a mystery after two weeks of play and it’s starting to look as if they may not be quite as good as some people may have predicted.

The Pack were soundly beaten by the Seahawks in week one, and save for an ill-timed Rex Ryan timeout last week, the Packers could be looking at an 0-2 record right now.

The offense woke up against the Jets last week and Aaron Rodgers and Jordy Nelson absolutely torched the New York D. Rodgers was in mid-season form at times, throwing for 345 yards and three TDs, while taking care of the ball despite being sacked four times.

Nelson was a stud, with nine grabs and 209 yards and one touchdown. The run game was lackluster at best and Eddie Lacy wasn’t much of a factor.

Not to rub it in, but I told a lot of people to skip on Lacy this year in their fantasy pools. He was a revelation last year with Rodgers out, but now that Aaron is healthy, the Packers are going back to their bread and butter and that is cutting teams apart through the air.

On D, Green Bay had trouble again in week two in stopping the run. The Jets racked up nearly 150 yards on the ground, but on the bright side, they limited Jets QB Geno Smith to just 176 yards through the air and picked him off once.

Lions

If there was ever a Jekyl and Hyde from the first two weeks this is the team. An offense that looked unstoppable at home in week one against the Giants went completely AWOL in week two, managing just seven points in a 24-7 loss to the Panthers.

The Lions were able to move the ball fairly efficiently against Carolina but were a turnover factory, losing two fumbles to go along with a Matt Stafford interception.

You’re just simply not going to win many games in the NFL when you lose the turnover battle by a count of 3-0. The Lions’ two pronged run attack of Reggie Bush and Joique Bell wasn’t a factor as the two combined for just 62 yards last week on 16 carries (3.8 yds/carry).

Returning home to Ford Field should be a welcome feeling for the Lions, who just didn’t look like the same team on the road in Carolina as they did in the comforts of the dome in week one.

NFL Week 3 Betting Trends

  • * Green Bay is 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
  • * Detroit is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games.
  • * Green Bay is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 meetings in Detroit.
  • * Green Bay is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings against the Lions overall.
  • * In the last 7 games between these 2 teams the total has gone Under 5 times.

Week 3 Packers vs. Lions 4* Free Pick

I have to stick with my original prediction here in that I believe the Lions are primed to take the reins as the class of the NFC North. Their run game will get a boost of confidence this week against a Packers D that ranks 31st in the NFL against the rush, and have allowed 353 yards on the ground in just two games.

Conversely, the Lions rank second in rush yards allowed, and have given up just 115 yards in their two games.

ATS Pick Lions -1 (-125)

The team that can dictate the run game is usually going to have the edge and I’d look for Bush and Bell to wreak havoc on the Packers this Sunday, leaving a lot of openings for Calvin Johnson in the pass game.
