But at 7-3 this season, they enter a crucial two-game road stretch late in the season, with playoff implications absolutely in play. Problem is, they may run into a buzz saw in New England.

Throughout 2014, the Lions have hung their hat on QB Matthew Stafford slinging it to WR Golden Tate (superstar Calvin Johnson has been battling injury), and a gnarly defense.

The Motown Kitties are fifth in the NFL thwarting the pass and tops in the league at plugging the run, yielding only 68 rush yards per game.

It’s a good recipe for success in the modern game, but the Pats are in an even better spot at 8-2 on the campaign.

Legendary QB Tom Brady got off to a slow start to the year, but he’s picked it up in a big way. The metrics can’t calculate how much more effective he is when a healthy Rob Gronkowski is in the lineup.

The athletic TE has 53 grabs for 734 yards and nine TDs and the chemistry between he and Brady is remarkable. It doesn’t hurt when the Pats – annoyingly good as they are  – have breakout performances from players like RB Jonas Gray (37 carries for 201 yards and four TDs versus Indy last week).

New England just keeps rolling along as one of the best teams in the AFC. It won’t be easy for Detroit in the unfriendly confines of Foxboro.

This has all the makings of an enjoyable football game. Detroit is better than it has been in a long time, and the Patriots are unquestionably dialled in with their performance.

The Lions lost a frustrating game last week to a logic-defying Arizona Cardinals team, 14-6. Detroit will need an offensive renaissance versus the Pats if it hopes for any success. Stafford-to-Megatron (or Tate) is a great place to start.

New England has big cornerbacks like Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner that can match up with Johnson, but the Lions also have other elements like Golden Tate and RB Joique Bell.

If the Lions could manage a win, it would say volumes about their compete level with the humming Green Bay Packers in the NFC North.

If they aren’t successful, it’s yet another example of the incredible consistency Brady and [head coach Bill] Belichick conjure up, season after season.

Free 4* NFL Pick: New England 21, Detroit 17

If Stafford has a game, Megatron can bounce back from ailments and the Detroit “D” plays like it can, the Lions have a decent shot at pulling the upset.

Take the UNDER

But if anything in those change of events goes awry, the Pats will be snagging their seventh consecutive win.
