The nightcap game is out in Oakland with the Raiders getting three points from the hated Denver Broncos. The spread for this game opened at one-point with the Broncos getting the bulk of the early action.
This used to be one of the NFL’s best rivalries, and it’s no secret that Oakland owner Al Davis and Denver coach Mike Shanahan despise each other. The problem is that the Raiders haven’t been very good the last three years, winning a total of 10 games, while Denver has won five out of the last six meetings between these two rivals.
That said, there’s still a lot of hope for Raiders’ backers. Oakland has covered the spread the last four times they’ve met and won the last game, 34-20 in Week 13. The Raiders’ defense held Denver quarterback Jay Cutler to 50% passing in that game, no touchdowns and two picks.
Cutler is hoping to have better success this time around, but it might not be easy with suspended wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Denver feels they can run the ball on anyone with their zone blocking scheme and Oakland was poor in that area last year.
Oakland has a talented, yet inexperienced quarterback in JaMarcus Russell, and they will keep the offense conservative. Look for the three-headed rushing attack of Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas and Michael Bush to expose the Broncos’ suspect run defense.
Points could be at a premium in this game, and that makes the 41 point Total very interesting.
