AFC East Futures – The Established and the Up and Comers

The New England Patriots finally have another team for critics to focus on in the AFC East. The New York Jets made some significant moves in the offseason in attempts to build on their impressive run from last season. The Patriots are still the Patriots however and have the same team that ripped up the NFL only a few seasons ago.

Miami acquired Brandon Marshall and are worth a look at +300 and the Buffalo Bills are poised to be at the bottom of the NFL.

New England Patriots: +130

Many view the New England Patriots as a team in transition. Those people are forgetting that a healthy Tom Brady will still be throwing to Stud Randy Moss and Super Workhorse Wes Welker.

The Patriots were the #3 passing team in the NFL last year despite Brady’s slow start due to his surgically repaired knee and they went 8-0 at home. Sure their secondary was weak and their defense was unable to stop the run but Coach Bill Belichek had an entire spring and summer to figure a way to improve on the defensive side of the ball.

New York may challenge but this division still belongs to the Patriots.

New York Jets: +140

I am a little tired of the hype around the New York Jets. They did go out and “improve” their offense and defense but trends have shown that a team can’t go out and acquire a Super Bowl. Out are All-Pros Alan Faneca and Thomas Jones. In are troubled Santonio Holmes, Antonio Cromartie and two players clearly past their primes, LaDainian Tomlinson and Jason Taylor.

Does this make the Jets a better team? Time will tell. The Jets will still be able to run the ball and they still have one of the best defenses in the game. They are good but not good enough to overtake the Pats for the division crown.

Second place is likely.

Miami Dolphins: +300

The Miami Dolphins could just be “that team” that surprises in the NFL this season. It seems that every year, one team comes out of nowhere and makes a run.

Chad Henne will be better this year and with Brandon Marshall playing opposite Devone Bess, Greg Camarillo and Anthony Fasano, the Fins suddenly have a passing game to be reckoned with. The running game will be solid as always. New Defensive co-coordinator Mike Nolan could be the difference in South Florida and he could make a poor defense competitive at very least.

Miami may be a year or two away from a division title but they are ready to make strides toward legitimacy right now.

Buffalo Bills: +2500

Ugh! It is going to be a long year for the Buffalo Bills and their fans. They still have no quarterback and they wasted an opportunity at the draft to improve their team when they took another running back CJ Spiller.

Buffalo’s inability to address glaring weaknesses will assure that they Bills finish last in the division and will be lucky to get four wins this season.

It should be a two horse race for the AFC East between the Patriots and the Jets. Don’t sleep on the Dolphins however in a division that just may be one of the more competitive this season.
