Atlanta Falcons vs Chicago Bears Preview

The Falcons have lost 5 straight games to the Bears, but are the away favorites in this game mainly because of an offense that has a chance to by more than dynamic this season. NFL lines have the Falcons as 2.5-point favorites with a total of 40.5.

Atlanta Falcons vs. Chicago Bears Preview

Atlanta gave up a lot of draft picks this season and in the next few ones to move up to take WR Julio Jones with the 6th pick. He looks to be the real deal and will only help a solid offense led by the trio of Matt Ryan, RB Michael Turner, and WR Roddy White. The Bears are led by their D with guys like Brian Urtlacher, Julius Peppers, and Lance Briggs, who will have to get to Ryan early and often, as well as help in the run defense.

It is interesting that the Falcons ranked 2nd to last in the NFL in pass plays of 20+ yards and Jones may help change that and the Bears’ secondary must keep the Atlanta WR’s from making the big play down the field.

Turner rushed for 1,371 yards last season and if he can run the ball well and keep the Bears from getting to Ryan they should have no problems lighting up the scoreboard.

Jay Cutler took some heat in the off-season for his injury in the NFC title game, but he is back and looked good in the preseason. He has a decent WR corps, but to find them the offensive line must play well. Last season Cutler was sacked 52 times and they are keeping with the same offensive line for the most part. I say the most part, as rookie Gabe Carimi is a massive OL and will start right away at RT and he has to step up and produce right away.

Atlanta struggled against the pass last season and the team added DE Ray Edwards to pressure opposing QB’s. DT Peria Jerry and LB Sean Weatherspoon are back after missing many games last season with injuries and the CB duo of Dunta Robinson and Brent Grimes have a lot of pressure on them to thwart the Bears passing attack, which will be much easier if their front line D can get to Cutler. Matt Forte had 1,616 yards from scrimmage last season and he will be counted on to pick up some yards on the ground. It is important that he plays well against a decent, but not great, Atlanta run defense, as it will keep the Falcons’ offense on the sidelines.

One big question in this game is how will Lance Briggs and Matt Forte play? They are 2 key players for the Bears, but each is not a happy camper, as Forte could not work out a new contract and Briggs requested a trade after he could not come to a new deal.

Betting Trends

Atlanta is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games, e 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as a road favorite, and has an Over record of 4-0-1 in their last 5 road games.
Chicago is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games, 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog, and has an Over record of 4-1 in his last 5 home games.

Jason’s Pick:

The Bears will still have issues protecting Cutler, but I still think he and the Bears offense will score some points against a suspect Atlanta defense. However, the Falcons will light up the scoreboard showing off their new weapon in Jones, as Atlanta will win this game and cover the 2.5-point spread.

In the last 6 games between these 2 teams the total has gone Under, but that trend will not continue, as the betting total for this game will go Over.
