Arizona vs San Francisco Betting?

Headline: Motivated 49ers Host Arizona in Week 17 – a Beat Down at the Bay?

The San Francisco 49ers had hoped to have the NFC West locked up by now but a loss in Week 16 has this team with a little work to do ahead of the impending playoffs. The good news for San Francisco, they host one of the most inept offenses the NFL has seen in years. The bad news – injuries on both sides of the ball means that there will be some kinks that need to be worked out this Sunday.

There is not a whole lot of good coming out of the desert these days. Since starting the season 4-0 the Arizona Cardinals have been brutal prompting the call for a major overhaul for this team in the offseason. There are problems in every aspect of the offense and the defense even though a .500 record suggests otherwise.

Arizona has been miserable offensively this season and now they will line up against the #2 NFL defense to close out their season. The Cardinals own the 30th ranked passing game with an average of 186 yards per game, they are dead last in rushing with an average of 76.60 yards per game and they are at the bottom of the league in scoring – 15.8 points per game.

Looking for a bright spot? There isn’t any – poor Larry Fitzgerald!

The Cardinals defense has actually been OK. They are #3 against the pass but an ugly 28th versus the run. The defense allows 22 points per game – which ranks a respectable 16th in the NFL. But with absolutely no offense, it doesn’t really mean a thing!

The San Francisco 49ers have some concerns! It’s a good thing the playoffs aren’t starting this week! The offense has been fine but the once vaunted defense has been exposed a tad and has given up nearly 70 points in the last six quarters of play. Injuries have surfaced as well – Justin Smith may miss his second straight week, Mario Manningham is gone for the season and Vernon Davis is questionable after sustaining a concussion against Seattle last week.

The 49ers will be all systems go on Sunday as they try to wrap up the division. The 49ers are currently 25th in the NFL in passing but are getting better with Colin Kaepernick and they are still 4th in the league in rushing. The 49ers are 11th in scoring as well but the offense as a whole will be looking to bounce back after an unflattering Week 16 at Seattle. Collin Kaepernick has completed 63.2 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and three interceptions while rushing for 410 yards and five touchdowns. Frank Gore is averaging 4.8 yards per carry with seven touchdowns and LaMichael James has started to contribute in a backup role. Michael Crabtree has 77 catches with seven touchdowns, Mario Manningham has 42 catches, and Vernon Davis has 40 catches. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Defensively the 49ers have to be licking their wounds a little bit but at the same time they have to be licking their chops at the prospect of facing the Cardinals – lots of licking! San Francisco is 4th against the pass allowing 199.73 yards per game, they are 6th against the run and they allow 17.33 points per game – good for 3rd in the NFL. An average performance is all that is necessary on Sunday – the Cardinals are that bad offensively!

A few trends to consider:

• The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Arizona’s last 5 games when playing on the road against San Francisco
• The total has gone OVER in 4 of Arizona’s last 5 games
• The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Arizona’s last 8 games on the road
• The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Arizona’s last 7 games when playing San Francisco
• San Francisco is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing Arizona
• The total has gone OVER in 6 of San Francisco’s last 7 games
• San Francisco is 13-3 SU in its last 16 games when playing at home against Arizona
• The total has gone UNDER in 4 of San Francisco’s last 5 games when playing at home against Arizona

The San Francisco 49ers are in desperate search of their mojo before the playoffs after a humbling defeat in Seattle and a close call in Week 15 against New England. I expect the 49ers to put the pedal to the metal on Sunday on both sides of the ball – poor Arizona! This is the blowout of the weekend – the obnoxious spread doesn’t scare me at all!

Pick: San Francisco 49ers 16 1/2
