Arizona Cardinals vs. San Francisco 49ers Preview

Both the Cardinals (5-10) and 49ers (5-10) are tied in the NFC West and the loser of this match up will end the season in the division basement. NFL lines have the 49ers as 6.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 38.5.

In their last games the 49ers were eliminated from playoff contention with their 25-17 loss to the St. Louis Rams the Cardinals beat the Dallas Cowboys 27-26.

While most thought that the Cardinals would struggle with losing QB Kurt Warner to retirement and WR Anqaun Boldin, who went to Baltimore, the 49ers were though to have a legit chance to win the weak NFC West. It did not work out that way and even though have gone 5-5 since their horrid 0-5 start it was not enough to save head coach Mike Singletary his job, as he was fired after San Francisco’s loss last week.

Not only are both teams are 5-10 on the season, but they are also 5-10 ATS.

The 49ers beat the Cardinals 27-6 in week 12 and in that game Arizona was dominated by the San Francisco defense only picking up 203 yards. The passed for 190 yards, but the Cardinals’ rushing offense gained a grand total of 13 yards. If that happens again they will likely get blown out again.

While the 49ers are 5 games under .500 they are 4-3 at home this season while the Cardinals are only 1-6 on the road. The only road win for the Cardinals this season was way back in week 4.

QB Alex Smith (2,094 yards 7 TD 10 INT) will get the start this week and unless he plays a great game his days in the Bay Area may be numbered. He played the 2nd half of the loss to the Rams after starter Troy Smith was benched and was 10/15 for 120 yards with 0 TD and 0 INT. Alex Smith did not play in the win over Arizona earlier this season. The Cardinals only have the league’s 22nd ranked pass defense, but they played pretty well last week against Dallas only giving up 199 passing yards and they came up with 2 picks. Football betting

Where the Cardinals have really struggled on defense is against the run ranking 30th in the league giving up an average of 148.2 rushing yards per game. Last week even though they beat the Cowboys they gave up 183 rushing yards. However, that may not hurt them that much since the San Francisco rushing attack has really struggled lately. RB Brian Westbrook did not practice Wednesday because of a non-injury related reason, but he will likely get the start in this game. He had one great game since taking over for the injured Frank Gore, but has not played well in a last few weeks.

Arizona rookie QB John Skelton was 11/25 for 183 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT in last week’s win and even though he is 2-1 since becoming the starting QB he is only completing 45.3% of his passes. He will be going up against the 49ers and their 24th ranked pass defense and he will have to make some big plays, especially hooking up with WR of Larry Fitzgerald (79 rec 1,012 yards 5 TD). 2nd leading WR Steve Breaston has been banged up and may not play in this game.

The Cardinals’ rushing offense has been terrible this season ranking 31st in the league. Neither Tim Hightower nor Beanie Wells has gotten the job done and on top of that San Francisco is sold defending the run ranking 7th in the league.

49ers’ 4-time Pro Bowl LB Patrick Willis will miss the first game of his NFL career this Sunday because of a broken hand.

Arizona does not have a high scoring offense and they could use some scoring from their D and special teams. This season they have 12 kick-return TD and well as 7 TD off fumble returns, which is a league record.

The Cardinals has lost 3 straight to the 49ers and in that span their have only averaged 10.3 ppg.

This game means noting, but the 49ers will come out in front of their home crowd and play like it does. Alex Smith will have a big game, but the main reason they will win is because of the D, which will shut the Cardinals down. Take the 49ers to cover the 6.5-point spread in this game.

Betting Trends

The Cardinals have failed to cover the spread in their last 4 games against the 49ers and they are only 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games. The 49ers are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a favorite.

Pick: 49ers -6.5
