2014 NFL Draft Handicapping Tips: Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens followed up a Super Bowl season by missing the playoffs. There is always a bit of a hangover after you win the title but this seemed more than that.

Team Needs

The defense looked OK despite huge losses but the offense looked slow all season long as Joe Flacco struggled and the running game was among the worst in the league. Ray Rice is still a quality back but they need to beef up the line in front of him.

Any kind of dynamic playmaker would be welcome too.

Defensively they need a bit more flash at the back end to create the turnovers that change the game that S Ed Reed used to.

Top Pick Target

OT Cyrus Kouandjio – The big tackle from Alabama has looked like a pro ever since he stepped on campus. He is an enormous tackle with great potential who probably didn’t excel as much with Bama though it is possible he was just overshadowed by more prominent players.

Picking in the late middle I think he should be available. If the Ravens might want to go best available because their needs are not glaring right now.

They might be able to get someone a little higher on the OL board depending on how things shake out.

Ravens 2014 nfl draft predictions

RB Dri Archer – I would love for the Ravens to get Archer and add some flash to their game whether it is as a runner, receiver or returner. His speed is fantastic and he is super elusive.

More importantly he is someone you have to account for on every play which puts a lot of pressure on the defense.

CB Justin Gilbert – I am not sure where he is going to go in the draft but if he is still on the board when they make their first pick I would take Gilbert in a heartbeat. At Oklahoma State he showed that he has a nose for the ball and can not only cover but make game changing plays.

CB may not be a huge need but you can never have enough quality corners the way teams throw the ball around these days.

WR Marquise Lee –  Like Gilbert, the USC product might be too good to ignore. He catches everything in his area and knows how to make people miss.

Plus even though there is no love for Lane Kiffin, Robert Woods showed last year that receivers in his offense are ready to play on Sundays.

Lee is a guy you don’t want to be saying we could have had him for the next 10 years and they could use some help outside.

LB Trent Murphy – To me he just seems like a Raven. He is a stout OLB that can stop the run and has enough wiggle to rush the passer – he led the nation in sacks last year.

The Ravens are the kind of organization that values production as much as potential and he will be a solid pro who can stay on the field in most situations.
