2014 NFC East Division Preview – NFL Handicapping Odds

Handicapping The NFC East

The NFC East was once one of the elite divisions in football, but it has fallen on some hard times of late. That isn’t to say that the division hasn’t offered some exciting football, with the division winner settled in a head-to-head matchup on the final day of the regular season four of the last five times.

The division should offer up some more thrilling action over the course of the season as each team within the division is dealing with some issues on defense, while appearing to offer up some strong options on the offensive side of the ball.

Here’s a breakdown of the NFC East for the 2014 season.

Philadelphia Eagles

Eagles NFC East Odds: +140

Eagles Super Bowl Odds: +2500

It turns out Chip Kelly’s offense translates to the pro ranks just fine. The Eagles were the only NFC East team to hit the double-digit mark in wins in 2013.

Kelly’s offense gave a big boost to LeSean McCoy, who really excelled in the run-friendly system that brought Kelly so much success in Eugene.

Kelly also kick started DeSean Jackson’s career, re-establishing him as a speed demon that defenses need to gameplan for. The biggest benefactor of Kelly’s move East has to be Nick Foles, who unseated Michael Vick as the team’s starting quarterback.

Defensively, the team brought in Marcus Smith through the draft to help a pass rush that had trouble getting to the quarterback a year ago.

The linebacking corps and secondary could still use some help.

New York Giants

Giants NFC East: +300
NFC Conference Odds: +2500
Giants Super Bowl Odds: +4000
N.Y. Odds from Sportsbook.ag

The big edge the Giants have over their divisional competition is that they appear to have the best defense of the bunch. With that said, they’ll need to get back to doing what’s made them so special all these years, and that’s getting pressure on the quarterback with their front four, and that begins with Jason Pierre-Paul.

Pierre-Paul has just two sacks over his last 18 games. General manager Jerry Reese added some bodies in the secondary to help improve that unit.

For the first time in his pro career, Eli Manning will need to adjust to a new offensive coordinator.

His familiarity with Kevin Gilbride’s offensive system was an asset, but he’ll now need to adjust to a new system under Ben McAdoo which will rely on quick passes, and the ability of Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle to pick up yards after the catch.

Washington Redskins

Redskins NFC East: +350
NFC Conference Odds: +2500
Redskins Super Bowl Odds: +5000
Washington Odds from Sportsbook.ag

The Redskins enter this season in desperate need of a name change, and with an offense that could be special. DeSean Jackson joins the fold at wide receiver to play alongside Pierre Garcon, who established himself as a true No. 1 option last season.

More importantly, Robert Griffin III returns to the field. With Alfred Morris lining up in the backfield, new head coach Jay Gruden will have plenty of options to work with, and if the players take to his system quickly, the unit can be really special.

The defensive side of the ball remains a work in progress. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett doesn’t have a lot to work with, and will need to maximize the output from outside linebackers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan.

Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys NFC East: +350
NFC Conference Odds: +2500
Cowboys Super Bowl Odds: +6000
Dallas Odds from Sportsbook.ag

The Cowboy offense will be airing the ball out plenty this season with new passing-game coordinator and playcaller Scott Linehan coming to town. He has all the weapons he could need at his disposal, with Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, DeMarco Murray, and Jason Witten each falling among the best at their respective positions.

The team will need to throw the ball around the park often, as their defense looks like it will be in for another awful season. New defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli has already lost Sean Lee from a unit that can’t afford to be without him.

NFC East Gambling Prediction

The Eagles are priced as favorites to repeat as division champions in 2014, but they will face some much stiffer competition this time around. The Redskins offer up some serious value given the improvements they appear poised to make.

A healthy Robert Griffin III could be all the difference.

NFC East Handicapping Pick: Redskins +350
