2014 NFL Draft Handicapping Tips – New York Giants

New York Giants

Perhaps no team in the NFL has more pressure on it to turn their fortunes around than the New York Giants – a team that stumbled out of the gate last year, eventually improved but still finishing an uber-disappointing 7-9.

While the G-Men did some solid work during Free Agency, particularly to their secondary, there are still some holes that need to be filled – the draft is seen as that chance.

What should the Giants be looking for? Let’s dig a little deeper.

Giants 2014 Draft Picks (7)

  • First Round (No. 12)
  • Second Round (No. 43)
  • Third Round (No. 74)
  • Fourth Round (No. 113)
  • Fifth Round (No. 152)
  • Fifth Round (No. 174 – Compensatory)
  • Sixth Round (No. 187)

Giants 2014 NFL Draft Predictions

On the surface, it may look like the Giants may target some Offensive Line help but that may come later – the G-Men appear happy with the guys they have on the roster – that they will step up under new Offensive Coordinator Ben McAdoo who comes over from Green Bay.

That said there is a common sentiment that McAdoo will be going after a quality Tight End or some D-Line help – the Tight End would play the Jermichael Finley/Andrew Quarless roll for the Giants and the Line help would simply be for some much-needed depth. There are some interesting names out there to fill both of those roles!

Tight Ends
[soliloquy id=”82219″]
Eric Ebron, UNC – is the name frequently associated with the Giants at Number 12. His athleticism is well known and his ability to gain yards after the catch is a coveted skill. Ebron looks like the man to plug the gaping hole at Tight End for New York but if they miss out on him…

Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Washington – should be sitting there in the second round as should Troy Niklas, Notre Dame. These guys are second round targets and likely won`t be selected until Day 2!

If the Giants steer away from a Tight End in the draft there are expectations that they target some Defensive Line help. They have Jason Pierre-Paul and Damontre Moore on the ends, and Johnathan Hankins replacing free agent departure Linval Joseph next to Cullen Jenkins. But there is zero depth after those guys.

Adding depth and perhaps a plug-and-play guy to spell one or two of their aging Line should be a priority in the drafts and there are some interesting names out there that would be a good fit.

Defensive Line

DT Aaron Donald, Pitt – is a name frequently mentioned as a Giants` first round target.

He was a force in college – a prototypical interior pass rushing lineman that the Giants need badly. His technique has been raved about and his explosiveness has impressed. The only problem for New York is that he may not be around at Number 12!

DE Kareem Martin, UNC, Louis Nix, Notre Dame and Timmy Jernigan, Florida State are all second round options for the G-Men – all bring immense talent and a fair amount of hype.

Of course there is a chance, given the right circumstances that the Giants could go after some Offensive Line help.

In that case some names that have been floated around are Taylor Lewan, Michigan on Day 1, G Dakota Dozier, Furman on Day 2 or G Kevin Danser, Stanford on Day 3 if the Giants are in a gambling mood.
