Bengals Destined To Take Step Back After Three-Straight Winning Seasons

The Cincinnati Bengals have improved their win total in each of the last three seasons, finishing with nine wins in 2011, 10 wins in 2012 and 11 wins in 2013. Despite improving the overall record every season the Bengals still haven’t won a playoff game in 23 years.

After failing to make any substantial offseason upgrades outside of the draft, Cincinnati could finally be set to take a step back in 2014.

The biggest question mark heading in to 2014 is the same as it was last year: how far can quarterback Andy Dalton take this team? Dalton set franchise records with 4,296 passing yards and 33 touchdowns a year ago, but he also threw a career-high 20 interceptions and struggled again in the Bengals’ lone playoff game.

Wide receiver A.J. Green is one of the NFL’s most talented receivers and he leads a strong cast of pass-catchers that includes Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu and tight end Jermaine Gresham. Cincinnati didn’t upgrade the receiver positions in the draft and free agency, but did take Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron in the fifth round.

The Bengals upgraded the rushing attack with second-round pick Jeremy Hill to help BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard carry the load.

The backs will need a stronger push up front to help open holes but the Bengals didn’t do anything to upgrade the offensive line positions other than drafting backup center Russell Bodine in the fourth round and signing back up tackle Marshall Newhouse from Green Bay.

Perhaps the biggest hit will be on defense where Cincinnati lost coordinator Mike Zimmer when he became the head coach in Minnesota. Former linebackers coach Paul Guenther takes over as coordinator and won’t change the system or philosophy for a group that finished third overall last season.

The Bengals welcome back All-Pro defensive tackle Geno Atkins after he suffered a torn ACL last season. Also, third-round pick defensive end Will Clarke will help the depth on the line behind Carlos Dunlap, Domata Peko, and Wallace Gilberry.

Linebacker Vontaze Burfict returns on the weak side after he led the NFL in tackles last season along with Rey Maualuga in the middle and Vinny Rey on the strong side. Cincinnati drafted cornerback Darqueze Dennard in the first round to push Leon Hall and Terrence Newman for a starting job and he will give the defense flexibility in sub-packages.

Reggie Nelson and George Iloka return at the safety positions.

The Bengals have improved in each of the past three seasons but they have failed to get the job done in the playoffs and could be due for a step back.

Cincinnati didn’t substantially upgrade its roster in the offseason and the rest of the AFC North is primed to be better.

The Bengals also have to deal with a tough schedule that includes road games at New England, Indianapolis, and New Orleans as well as a home date with Denver and a tough divisional schedule, so you can expect their stock to drop a bit in 2014.
